I spent most of my time in the Chicago area. I have written several short stories and slightly longer ones along with various other things. “Awoken” is my first time publishing anything and I made it freely available to get any critiques I can. I am not looking to become the next best selling author, but I would like to improve to the best of my ability and I enjoy hearing other’s opinions. As far as my personal life, I enjoy kayaking, skiing, exploring new areas, swimming, movies and spending time with friends.

    A Short Story

    By Andrew Ditch

    Chapter 1

    New Surroundings

Jerry's eyes opened slowly. The light flooded his eyes like white paint pouring onto marbles. The intensity was almost too much too bear and it was causing the already throbbing headache to worsen. The ringing in his ears was also painful but luckily for him, it was starting to subside. Jerry felt like those times when his body woke up from a dream before his mind did.

Jerry could not make sense of anything but very gradually the picture was beginning to focus. Finally, he could make out the images of florescent tube lights above him. They gave off a sterile white glow that matched everything else around him. The room was very small, only 5 feet by 5 feet. It was barely acceptable for a prison cell. You could easily imagine that the room was at one point a pristine white, but time had taken its toll. There were scuff marks dotting the walls which took away from its untouched finish but did nothing to diminish the sterile feeling like that of a hospital. It was probably once a bright and lustrous white but had since faded to a dull off-white. The air was even stale in the room leaving a scent of ozone in the nostrils. Since Jerry could not remember the events that had led him to this place, he assumed that it was a hospital and that he had been in an accident of some sort. He could not imagine how anyone could possibly feel better in a room such as this though. There were no windows for natural light, not even a small one which looked out to a brick wall. There was one door in front of him, however it had no window and allowed no light to shine through underneath. The room was small enough to make anyone claustrophobic. It reminded him of the padded white cells he always saw in TV shows only without the padding.

Jerry steadied himself as he tried to sit upright. Thankfully, the pressure pounding inside his skull had dropped to a mere thud and only often enough to remind him that it was still there. With his view of the world right side up again, he tried to remember what happened to him. He could remember his whole life. He knew his name and all of his personal details. He knew the names of his wife and children. He even knew the name of his great aunt that he never met but heard talk of at family gatherings. He had no
