BOOK OVERVIEW
There is a simple yet life-changing technique used and can be used by anybody to have their lives transformed dramatically and this technique is the 5 Second Rule; it’s written by someone whose own life was transformed because of this. The technique is as simple as counting down from 5 to 1 and physically moving within that time frame—simple as it is, its reasons have a deeper meaning to it.
Mel Robbins found this technique at the most unexpected time of her life: she was at the point in her life where she hit rock bottom and she couldn’t even get out of bed in the mornings. This all changed when she was watching a television commercial where a countdown was featured before seeing a rocket launch into space. From that day on, she declared that she will launch herself like that rocket the moment she woke up the morning after.
She kept on getting up the same time every day despite days where she wanted to hit the snooze button every single time. And this brought her to realize the power of pushing herself to wake up and get up every day that she started applying this to different aspects of her life.
She had a countdown timer in her mind: moving unsupportive thoughts and negative moods out, pushing herself to take action, and doing the things that she needed to do to get herself and her family out of the state they were in—all these things she called to action within 5 seconds.
The success that this brought her motivated her to help others help themselves by teaching them to use this technique. A life coach helped her get everything in her life in order and this propelled her to want to be a life coach herself. The 5 Second Rule allowed those small pushes and calls to action to lead to bigger results. From being down in the dumps, she was able to start companies, become a coach and speaker, and help change thousands of lives in over 80 countries.
The 5 Second Rule is a book that shares stories of transformation, including Mel Robbins’, from using this simple technique to people who need this kind of push to help themselves. And this rule
