The Game intensifies...

Light and darkness...

All Kein wanted was to be devoured. As an orphan, she had been told since joining her school that it was very important that a house or clan devour her so when she met a creature promising to devour her, she was confused at first but then she was consoled that someone wanted her.

A world of monsters and a world of humans...

Loneliness can be a very strong emotion but it can also be a very strong motivator so even when a creature of the darkness invited her to come to her, innocence heeded the call. Kein began an adventure of heartache and joy as she walked the paths of shadow and light. She would discover what it was to be devoured as a dangerous game drew her into a deadly realm of wishes, revenge, hope, desire, love, and horror.

    Chapter Twenty-eight

    The Judicium Begins

Kein had finished her questions for the day with the Residents, and she even had her time with the lady. She was about to start on the Fourth Quest when Controller instructed her to go to the Black Arrow room. Kein arrived to find that she stood on one end of the room while King Ammon, Dr. Jekyll, the Atlantean, and Lafayette sat in folding chairs on the other side. There was an area in the middle where Shukujo was dropped into. Kein was told that the room was a beast known as the Judicium and that it would enact judgment for a crime committed by the Kumovon.

    Moments earlier…

If you don't enact punishment on Shukujo, the Judicium will through the chair, King Ammon warned her as if she should really heed him. The punishment may be too light, and you will miss out on a chance to punish the Kumovon for what she did to you.

I still don’t understand, and I still don’t want to be here. As her advocates, what will you do to help her? Kein questioned them desperate for answers to a puzzle she didn’t want to solve.

King Ammon answered, The Kumovon female means nothing to me. I decline to help her.

    King Ammon left.

The Atlantean stated, The Kumovon female also means nothing to me. I decline to help her.

The Atlantean left, and Dr. Jekyll left with him without saying a word.

Mr. Bayard, you will be her advocate, won't you? Kein questioned, begging him to stay. She didn’t want to be alone with Shukujo and this beast known as the Judicium, so she pleaded, Please… don’t leave. I can’t do this.

I don't think you understand our part in this, so I better also decline, Lafayette told her.

The vampire left, and then the chair started to glow, and a male voice spoke from it, The Kumovon female known as Shukujo has been found guilty of the murders of Addie and Dekker.

No! Kein screamed as the worse possible thing that could happen was starting to transpire. She turned and rushed for the door on her side. Kein tried to leave, but the door was locked. She banged on it with her fists as she desperately screamed, Let me out!

Face me! Shukujo screeched at her, knowing full well why she was sitting in the Inquisition Seat. You can’t run away from this! she screamed, not out of hatred but out of guilt. I can’t run away from this and now you can’t run away from this! Face me!

Kein slowly turned and walked back to her folding chair and grabbed the back of it with both of her hands. She had a sense of what was coming, of what would be revealed, and she didn’t want to be there. She didn’t want to hear any more. Kein wanted to run away like she always ran away. She wished the pain that was coming never existed. Yes, Kein finally had a wish for the Mortem. She wished with all her being that the pain from what would be revealed would never exist.

The Judicium said, Kein, daughter of Addie and Dekker, enact your punishment on the one who killed your parents.

Shukujo just wanted to scream. The thing she discovered… The thing she kept from the human…. The Hanta she murdered were Kein’s parents. She was the one who destroyed Kein’s family. Shukujo just wanted to scream, but she held her tongue and waited for the human to react with all her rage and heartache.

When she learned of the truth, Kein just stood there and said nothing. Her heart raced in her chest as she stared at the one accused of killing her… Shukujo had confessed to murdering Addie and Dekker, there was no secret there, but… Addie and Dekker were her parents. They were the family taken from her by some insidious force. She thought about her life. She was Kein because they were dead and now it was in the open. Shukujo murdered her parents, and she had to face that. Kein had to come to terms with the truth. She was Kein because Shukujo killed her parents.

See! Shukujo finally screamed. We could never be friends. You understand now! Those humans I killed… they were your mother and father. I made you an orphan, baka. I am the one who forced you to go through life alone and unwanted. You understand now why we can never be sisters. I murdered your family. Your family betrayed me, and I took their lives and then I... I sliced open your mother's belly and ripped you from her womb. I placed a curse on you, and no other clan will accept you. I made you a curse among your own people, and I made you good for only one thing in their eyes and that was to be an incubator for a wretched Scorpioid child. I made you worthless... I made you nothing... I... I made you Kein.

She said nothing to Shukujo for a long time. She wanted the human to scream at her. She wanted the human to rush upon her and have the Scorpioid child slice her open as she had sliced Addie open, spilling her womb all over the cold concrete floor.

I told you we could never be friends! Shukujo screeched at her when the human remained quiet. We were meant to only be one thing to each other. We were destined to be enemies. Shukujo lifted her voice and shouted at the ceiling, Who brought these charges against me? I have a right to know.

I did, the voice of Green Serpent spoke over the intercom.

How did you know that Addie and Dekker were Kein’s parents? Shukujo questioned.

You interest in her and your lack of bloodlust. You did care about those humans, in a way, before they betrayed you. I assumed the day you invited Kein into your lair you had a mission in mind. You wanted to find out for yourself if this annoying human was the baby you claimed you devoured.

But why did you bring this judgment upon me? Shukujo inquired. I know you did not do it for Kein.

I did it for revenge, Green Serpent told her. I don’t like to lose money. Remember that if you should survive. One of you will end up dead today, and I will make up for my losses.

I will not forget this, Shukujo threatened him. I will one day repay you for this.

I’m betting good money you will never have the chance, Green Serpent told her. I’m betting the human will make this your very last day.

Shukujo screamed out of frustration as the tube-like arms that were wrapped around her body kept her from moving. Her head and hands were the only things that weren’t constrained, but her arms and legs were wrapped up tightly. She shouted at the human as all eight of her eyes started to water, Do you understand now? We were destined to be enemies.

I know, Kein replied as she sobbed. She couldn’t believe the pain and suffering the Judicium was bringing about. She wanted to say something that would fix all of this, but she was having problems finding her words. Kein tried to control her crying as she spoke, Or I should say, I already knew. I'm not expressing myself properly. What I meant to say was–

The Judicium proclaimed, Punishment must be enacted or I will deem what punishment the Kumovon deserves for such an infraction.

No, wait! Don’t do anything! Kein yelled. I just want to talk to Shukujo.

What looked like a lizard’s tail lifted and placed a helmet over Shukujo's head. The helmet covered all her eyes and her ears and only left her mouth visible.

What have you done? Kein shouted as she immediately knew what the helmet was designed for. You can’t do that to her. It’s too cruel. Kumovons need their senses to function. You can drive them insane if you deprive them of their senses.

The Judicium told her, I have enacted my punishment. The helmet may not be removed for twelve hours. You may do what you wish to the Kumovon, but you may not remove the helmet or remove her from the chair. The rest of her punishment I leave to you.

Shukujo plunged into the depths of silence and no sensation. She couldn’t even sense any of her Kumovon children. Shukujo had never been so detached from reality. She wanted to scream, but she held her tongue. She wouldn’t give the human the satisfaction of hearing her suffer. Shukujo struggled in the chair, but her strength was no match for the Inquisition Seat.

Further and further she fell into the void of her perceptions. There was nothing… no sound… no sights… no smells… no tastes… The Judicium even managed to remove her sense of touch. Shukujo was nearly at her limit when she felt someone grab her hand which was odd since she had lost her sense of touch. The hand was warm, and it made her hand warm. It was almost as if someone was lending her their senses. She was surrounded by darkness, and then suddenly, the world around her became alive like she was standing in a forest. The luscious green forest was surrounded by crumbled ancient ruins, the sounds of birds filled her hearing, and a gentle breeze brushed by her face.

Shukujo, she heard the voice of Kein speak her name. Shukujo, can you hear me?

I hear you. Have you come to kill me? Will you murder me like I murdered your parents?

Shukujo, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have let it go this long. If I had known this would happen, I would have told you sooner. I just wanted to wait till you were ready.

What are you talking about? the Kumovon questioned her. It is time to take your revenge. I am completely helpless. What will you do to me?

Kein spoke, ignoring the Kumovon’s question, What I meant to tell you earlier… the thing I wanted to tell you that would hurt you, so you didn’t want to hear it yet… well… I wanted to tell you that I know you are the one who killed my parents.

You lie, Shukujo spoke. You are playing some sort of game with me, and you are lying to me. You did not know. You could not have known and still treated me the way you did. You spoke to me as if we were friends, friends who were as close as sisters.

I did know, Kein told her. Here, take a glimpse at my memories and see that I’m telling you the truth. The human paused and said, "Shukujo, you were telling me for the first time the detailed account of when you killed Addie and Dekker. You should remember your own
