Refiner’s Fire: Christ’s Redeeming Love Changing Lives Forever

This book encompasses the story of two lives given over completely to their Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, and their journeys through His refining fire. The trials and testings designed especially for them taught trust and obedience in the One whose redeeming love changes lives forever.

    Introduction

Have you ever taken time to look into a clear night sky just to observe and enjoy the multitude of stars God has placed there just for you, each one unique and different in its own way? There are really only a few places to observe this wonder in its fullest—in the quiet of the country, out on a lake, or up in the mountains, just to name a few. Here conditions are just right, with no man- made light to dull the natural beauty or distract from God’s creation. The sky is dark, and the stars sparkle and shine like diamonds on a bed of black velvet. If atmospheric conditions are right, you may be treated to a light show that surpasses even the beauty of the stars—the Auroras Borealis, or Northern Lights, that dance across the sky with an intense colour and rhythm all their own. Psalm 19:1 says "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handywork." I can picture David on a mountainside tending his father’s sheep, looking up into such a sky as these words resonate through his heart.

When God showed me this analogy, I began to wonder just what He sees as He looks down on us. Are we beautiful diamonds shining His light in the darkness around us, or do the distractions of man-made light outshine His beauty within us? Like He made the stars, God created each of us unique and different. We all have a destiny, or purpose, to fulfill on our earthly sojourn. To allow God’s light to shine within us, we must first commit our lives to serving Him and walking the path He has chosen for us, frequently coming aside from the noise and distractions of the city to the quiet of the countryside, lake, or mountains to commune and develop an intimate relationship with Him.

The Bible teaches that our life here on earth is like a vapour … here today and gone tomorrow. Time as we know it does not exist in heaven. In 2 Peter 3:8, Peter says that "one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." On this side of heaven, it seems like we have a very long time to sort things out, but our time on earth is very short indeed, and how we spend it matters much to God.

In Matthew 26:6–7 we read of a woman who came to Jesus at the home of Simon the leper with an alabaster flask of costly, fragrant oil. She poured it out and anointed Jesus’ head. This act of love cost her a great deal, most likely all that she had, yet she gladly gave humbly, not caring what others thought. Likewise, Jesus loved us so greatly that He poured out His life’s blood on Calvary’s cross, taking the punishment that was rightly ours so that we could have forgiveness of our sins and a restored relationship with God. We in turn must ask ourselves how we will spend our lives. Are we a brilliant, shining star fulfilling God’s destiny for our lives, or do we allow the distractions of this world to keep us hidden in a dark corner? The path God has laid out for us is not always an easy one, and there will be many stumbling blocks along the way, but God will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5b).

    Journey

    Chapter One

    A New Life

For God so loved the world, that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

    —John 3:16

The rosy hues of the morning announced that at any moment the sun would make its appearance in the eastern sky. Although the temperature was somewhat cool, the day was promising to be a beautiful one—a perfect day to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord. The sunrise service would begin the day, followed by the youth group breakfast and then back to church for the regular Easter morning service. As I walked back to the church after breakfast, I couldn’t help but contemplate what lay ahead, for at the conclusion of this Easter celebration there would be a water baptism service during which I would declare my love for God. Little did I know then the wonderful life I would lead as a child of God. Looking back some forty-plus years later, I can truly say that March 29, 1970, was the best day of my life. I do not regret taking that first step to follow after Christ.

Calling to remembrance my early years, I can see the gentle ways in which God drew me to a walk with His precious Son, Jesus Christ. For example, the times I would rise very early in the morning to find my father reading God’s Word or praying before leaving for work, and the many things he taught me about the love of God during those special times together. The years growing up in the Anglican church, and particularly the Junior Auxiliary (J.A.) group my mom and I attended together … she as a leader and I, a student. One project we did together remains uppermost in my mind, that being the dolls we made to send to the poor children of a distant country. The importance of giving to others less fortunate was ingrained on my young mind.

We often don’t realize how fortunate we are until the world as we know it changes and the things we hold dear are snatched away from us. At the tender age of ten my world came crashing down around me when my parents separated and later divorced. During that first year we saw my father often, but the following year we moved three times and never saw him or heard from him again for many years. The loss of my father was devastating for me, leaving a hurt that would fester for many years.

It took eight long years of living with this festering pain before God finally got my attention and I realized that I needed the peace that had carried my father through the tumultuous circumstances that surround a divorce. In that moment I discovered a New Testament Bible that my dad had left behind, perhaps for just that day. As I read, I began to see the love God had for me, and the path I needed to take to leave the anger and pain behind in favour of the life- changing gift of God’s salvation. While watching a Billy Graham crusade on television one evening, I acknowledged my sin and asked Jesus to be Lord of my life. At that very moment my sins were forgiven and I began an intimate, covenant walk with my Creator.

Within a very short time my mother, not knowing of my salvation experience, decided we should visit the local Baptist church. There I obtained sound biblical teaching at the hand of a missionary doctor and his wife, Beth, and there I finally made a public confession of my belief in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour when I was water baptized on that fine Easter Sunday. As I sank beneath the water, the cares of this world were all washed away, and I rose up a new creature in Christ Jesus. It’s said that life is a bed of roses, and perhaps that’s true, but all too often people forget the thorns that adorn the stems of those beautiful roses.
