Enterramos a los primeros con formalidad y reverencia. Ahora suena tonto, pero ¿qué podíamos hacer? Después de todo aún eran nuestros hijos. Hasta vestí bonita a mi Sarah para la ocasión; le puse su mejor ropa dominguera, un vestido amarillo de algodón que brillaba contra el marrón oscuro de su piel, con un patrón cosido a mano para cubrir su cuerpecito torcido. La llevamos al reposo dentro de una pequeña caja de madera, la anidamos en un hoyo poco profundo que Ray excavó detrás de la casa. Solo lo mejorcito para mi primera bebita. Pero incluso después, cuando nuestro trozo de tierra tenía más tumbas que suelo, mantenía cerca a mis hijas. Me deslizaba por la noche para arrojar bolsas de yute a las aguas oscuras del pantano al final del camino, para tirar bultos envueltos a las fosas de huesos, donde ni siquiera los caimanes y los zorros se alimentan. La necesidad, como quien dice, es la madre de la invención.
Así eran las cosas: daba a luz a un hijo y esperaba que no saliera doblado, roto. Luchaba con la amargura cuando el bebé se convertía en un monstruo de ojos saltones y la cabeza del tamaño de un tomate, unos brazos y piernas largos y flacos como hierbas silvestres en el jardín de un viudo. Pero aún así amaba al pequeñín, cubría su cuerpo con cuentas de rosario y pañuelos de espíritu. Luego rezaba para que de alguna manera esos talismanes purgaran a los demonios de un alma rota. Y cuando ya estaba muerto, lloraba y lloraba y me confortaba en los brazos de mi esposo y así, como si nada, tenía otro.
Al principio, la gente buena me visitaba justo después. Traían libros de oraciones y pan perdido, decían Pobre Marie mientras sujetaban mis temblorosas manos. Yo asentía con la cabeza cuando me decían que necesitaba ponerme cuentas de conjuro por la noche, o lavarme ahí adentro con agua bendita, o comer sólo pescado blanco los viernes. Me aseguraba de sonreír cuando me recordaban que les había pasado lo mismo alguna vez, pero el brujo se había encargado de las cosas y míralos ahora, rodeados por una manada de ángeles perfectos.
Nunca dije una palabra sobre lo sucedido en esos últimos días, cuando las oraciones fracasaron y las noches se enfriaron y la alacena quedó vacía. Nunca mencioné cómo se agitaban los brazos larguísimos de Sarah ni cómo sobresalían sus ojotes cuando le tapé la nariz y la boca con la mano. Tampoco revelé que solo a la tercera me salió bien, cuando gritó y me mordió la mano y de puro coraje, le rompí el cuello como a cualquier gallina. Y nunca le conté a nadie cómo ella seguía regresando. ¿Quién podría culpar a una niña por extrañar a su madre?
Fue un mes después del primer cumpleaños de Júnior cuando el olor a muerte se esparció por el aire, amargo y pesado; era un olor a cobre, como una mezcla de vinagre y almizcle. Ray dijo que esa peste provenía de ratas de pantano ahogadas, persistía en las orillas fangosas y en el agua turbia que lamía los zancos de madera bajo nuestro porche, como durante cualquier verano con demasiada lluvia. Yo le eché la culpa a los mejunjes del brujo: el barro curativo que debía untarle a Júnior en la frente cuando la luna estaba alta; una bolsa de amuletos que debía guardar bajo su cuna desde el atardecer hasta el amanecer; y algo que solo llamaba a Lo Bueno, que debía mezclarse con agua fresca de la cisterna y beberse dos veces al día. Todo para mantener al demonio lejos del cuerpo de nuestro pequeño.
—Estoy harta de todo ese mugrero —le dije a Ray—. Nunca sirve para nada.
