Preface
The dizi, also called Hengdi/橫笛, is a Chinese transverse flute (horizontally held when played) usually carved with twelve holes. With a history of more than 8 000 years since the Neolithic Age, the dizi is one of the musical instruments indigenous to China. Members of the blowing family
Bangdi/梆笛
Qudi/曲笛
Sheng/笙
Suona/嗩吶
The dizi is indispensable to the modern Chinese orchestra and plays a role similar to its western counterpart, the flute. Songs in different genres have emerged after the end of the Cultural Revolution, whilst the adaptation of foreign songs has brought continuous advances on playing techniques for the dizi.
