About this ebook

Darby Darknight was at a loss. Gertie was his fated mate, but so far all she’d done was make him the laughing stock of people he didn’t even know. His fault, he supposed, since he’d arrived after she had. Now he needed to get back her regard and claim her as a mate while they chased a vampire set on vengeance against his whole race. Easy, right?
Gertie Worthington wanted to be anywhere but here. Oh, it had been amusing at first. Darby had ended up on the wrong side of everything. Now it was so bad she felt sorry for him. That wasn’t good and he might use that to his advantage. All she wanted to do was go home.
Would they manage somehow to overcome their unfortunate past or would love pass them by?

Crystal Dawn

When she’s not out hunting rogue vampires and werewolves, you can find Crystal Dawn out exploring the galaxy. She can do it all without ever leaving her computer. She kicks ass, takes names, and puts it all down for the enjoyment of her readers. At least that’s what I think she told me. Writing came as a natural outlet for her overly creative mind. She has always told stories and even written some but publishing books didn't start until 2012 with The Rebirth, was the first of the Planet Amazon books. Crystal has also been lucky to have some wonderful beta readers who keep her on track and help inspire her.Secretly, she crushes on all her sexy heroes because all her stories end happily. That is one of the things that makes writing such a joy. Knowing that it makes her reader's day a little brighter. Not that she doesn't read sad books sometimes. While still in school, she read Where the Red Fern Grows and cried like a baby. It was a wonderful book and sometimes a bit of sadness has to be put in books because that's part of life. While she reads all kinds of books at some time or another, PNR and SFR, which she writes is what she reads the most for pleasure. When she started writing, she decided on going Indie after the first two books because an author has more control. She believes Indie will compete well and continues to grow. The need to give pleasure to her readers keeps her going and she sees a long career ahead. Growing up mostly in the NW Arkansas area, it has given her a good place to set some stories and many of her characters come from there or nearby SW Missouri. The start of her stories is the easy part. Finishing them is a little harder when all the stories are in there trying to get out. She loves reading, chocolate, fine sweet wine, and traveling among a large list of pursuits. Her favorite people, after her family and close friends, are her readers who she says are some of the most wonderful people in this galaxy and the next.

    Preface

    The thing about Scorpios…

Scorpio is number eight of the twelve signs of the zodiac. Their element is water and the ruling planet, Pluto. Their good qualities are they can be loyal, protective, brave, and passionate. Some Scorpios are magnetic and those are leaders when it comes to trends.

Bad characteristics are they can be jealous, possessive, and even obsessive. Sometimes they are manipulative, secretive and vengeful. These people are charming, but dangerous. Scorpios often deal with the darker side of things. They have a hawk like stare that seems to read people like a book.

While one Scorpio is dangerous, two can be deadly. Darby is a Scorpio as is Gertie and he will be the next leader of the vampires. Gertie, whether she likes it or not, will be his mate. The only question is will they be true leaders or spend all their time fighting each other. Only time will tell.

    Prologue

They’d known they were mates for a long time and most other people had known it too. He’d ignored it and possibly hurt her, but he was ready to acknowledge it now and be the mate she wanted. It didn’t seem to matter to her. She’d had enough of him, and she didn’t want him anymore if she ever had. Also, she wanted some payback for whatever he’d done that had hurt her.

All he knew was he wanted her and always had. He needed to change her mind before there was no way to do it and they would both be cursed with unhappiness forever after. Darby just didn’t know how to do it or how to find out how to. He swore he’d figure it out and claim his mate forever more or die trying.

    Chapter 1

    The Next Step

One of Jorge’s protégés, Juan Carlo, had been dealt with. Not only was he on his way to Darby’s father, but Gregorio Nemershad tried to break him out and had also gotten caught in their web. He was on the list too. It was always better to let those you hunted come to you. That was Darby’s thought on the matter.

Darby was feeling just a little bit better right now. Gertie, his fated mate, had even smiled at him. Only briefly, but that was better than what she usually did. His deepest desire was to claim her as his own. A desire that had once been supported by his father after Pru had been taken by Herk.

That had been a good day for him. His father was not normally a bad guy, not really. He just had no finer feelings and didn’t believe in fated mates. After all, he’d not married one. His mother was alright too, just not a strong or particularly loving person. She was, however, a perfect hostess and the ultimate political wife. This was all his father wanted for himself, and therefore for his oldest son. More was unnecessary and not to be expected. Therefore, Darby shouldn’t want it either.

Now that Pru was gone and Gertie next on the list, his father was fine with him claiming her. In his father’s mind, that was willing or not. He knew if he tried to force her, she would hate him forever. That wasn’t acceptable. As long as he was on this mission to take down Jorge, or whatever his current name was, he had time to woo his mate. Since she wasn’t laughing at him, he considered that progress. It was, wasn’t it?

Since he was capturing the males that supported Jorge that was progress too. They were wanted and needed to be hunted as well. Right now, the next one for them to hunt was Jagas DeVito. They were working their way up the list instead of down and now he felt success would come with time. Maybe they would even accidently catch Jorge unprepared. Hope was an amazing if fragile thing.

Breakfast smelled delightful and the good coffee, the ones the females drank, was good too. Are you ready yet? Herk asked. Darby looked at his full plate and cup.

Does it look like it? He said and took a big bite of food.

They had blood substitute here and while it tasted terrible, it did the job. Food helped him to need less of the nasty stuff, but there were things in it that his body required. I’ve never seen a vampire eat so much. Herk observed.

Have you ever seen an older vampire? He asked.

    Like Jorge?

No, like me. I recently passed a milestone and my hair darkened. I’m no longer considered a youngling. Jorge will pass that same milestone soon. His hair, eyes, or even skin color may change, and his power will level up. He took another big bite.

Jorge is a youngling? Herk questioned.

He just nodded as he ate more food quickly and gulped his coffee. The others were beginning to gather. Pretty soon he’d have to stop eating so they could go. His last bite and he gulped his coffee now ready to go. Gertie stepped in the room.

What is taking so long? She asked.

Everyone looked at him. He gave her an innocent look. Ready? He asked. She didn’t answer, she just flashed them instantly. It was so fast he feared he’d lose his meal, but he managed to keep it down.

They were in a castle, in the dungeon portion dank and dark. He could see easily enough, and he wondered if Jagas was torturing a prisoner. As they walked down the hall between two rows of cells, the answer was not so easy. Jagas himself occupied one of those cells.

He barely clung to life and looked beaten, starved, and filthy. Maybe he had information they could use. Can we flash him back with us? He asked.

Gertie nodded. They were back in a second with Jagas nearby without any chains attached. His witch was more powerful than he’d thought. It looks like Jorge and Jagas had a parting of ways. Julio observed.

A harsh one at that. He admitted. Would they get information from him if he survived? They could only hope so.

I never expected you to show mercy to an enemy. Gertie admitted.

There is kindness in me. Why do you not expect that from me? He asked.

Your background makes me expect selfishness. She explained.

That’s harsh. Have you no give at all? He asked. It was true that he’d told them to be gentle with the guy, but he’d saved him for information. Not something he wanted to share with Gertie.

Let’s get the poor guy cleaned up and fed before we put him in a cell. Our cells are more comfortable, and it will be easier on him.

They were too. The prisoners were fed three times a day and the food was filling if not mouthwatering. Their clothes and cells were cleaned weekly, and they got medical care as needed. While it wasn’t a dream life, it wasn’t that uncomfortable. Dull, yes because they had no entertainment. There was little company and while the bed wasn’t awful, neither was it a pleasure to sleep on.

His people usually put criminals to death if they were bad enough. That’s what Jorge would get. This guy, maybe not because he wasn’t as bad, and he might help them. It was hard to say what his punishment might be. Someday, it would be his job to determine that but not today. Since they’d come back so quickly, they decided to go after Daniel Rodriguez.

That guy wasn’t a vampire or a serious criminal. He was a smuggler and seller of goods to people that shouldn’t have those goods. This would get him a minimum of ten years hard labor. The kind of work chain gangs had
