    Chapter 1 – Basic Information about Ketogenic Diet

    The Ketogenic diet, regarded by its advocates as one of the most profound health boosting lifestyle changes for effortless weight loss, has been used for a number of different purposes since it was first discovered. The diet has become popular among Western society, for its ability to give dramatic results, not only in regards to weight loss but other lifestyle factors as well.

    Ketogenic (keto) Diet is a low-carb, high-fat diet that contains moderate protein. The diet plan requires users to drastically reduce their daily carb intake and replace it with fat, putting the body in a metabolic state that's known as ketosis. The Ketogenic Diet, otherwise knows as Keto Diet, is a way of eating which emphasizes a very low carbohydrate intake and high fat intake, with a low to moderate protein intake. The ideal daily dietary ratio is made up of 5% carbohydrates, 15% protein and 80% fat. Foods that are allowed are meat, fish, poultry, shellfish, nuts, cheese, and seeds. Most vegetables are also allowed while fruits are limited because of their high sugar content.

    The aim of the diet that eliminates carbohydrates almost completely is to induce a metabolic state within the body known as ketosis. It is in the state where the dramatic body composition changes occur.

    The Ketogenic Diet was designed by Dr. Russel Wilder in 1924 at the Mayo Clinic for the treatment of epilepsy in children. Although it was highly effective, its fame slowly diminished because of the release of new medications for seizure in the 1940s.

    The Charlie Foundation, which was founded in 1994 by the family of Charlie Abraham, picked up the principle behind the Ketogenic Diet. Charlie used to have daily seizures even after trying all known anti-seizure medications. A brain surgery also didn’t support his condition so his family turned to the decades old Ketogenic Diet. Charlie started on the Ketogenic Diet when he was still a toddler and adapted the eating pattern for 5 years. He is now in college and has remained seizure free since then. The foundation is actively promoting the Ketogenic Diet both as treatment for epilepsy and other brain disorders, and as a healthy diet system that can be adapted by all people into their lifestyles.

    The Ketogenic Diet, being a low-carb diet system, restricts carbohydrate consumption to less than 20 percent of the daily caloric intake. Because of the low carbohydrate amount in this diet system, it can also be used to prevent or treat chronic medical problems like cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes.

    Ketogenic Diet experts advocate argue that this diet, like the Paleolithic diet, is closer to the diet of humans 15 thousand years ago, before the dawn of agriculture. They say that humans are adapted genetically to diets that are low in carbohydrates because food rich in it were scarce during those ancient times.

    There is an evident when the Paleolithic lifestyles are compared to modern day hunter-gatherers. Because of the greater availability of animal meat and the scarcity of food crops, their diets are composed of a lower amount of carbohydrates (around 22 to 40 percent). And in areas where plant availability dominates, the consumption of carbohydrates remains relatively low because wild plants contain much lower carbohydrate and higher fiber content than crops that are grown domestically. If human beings have been living like that for tens of thousands of years, our bodies are more adapted to consuming more fats and protein
