About this ebook

Time Sample 1 is a collection of poetry and paintings from 1976 to 2016. Harbor Lights is a poem written in 1976. First published in an anthology by Green Valley Press. Later poetry and paintings portray a sense of continuity through the years. River has maintained an amazing creative path. In the Poetry Cafe "Self Portrait" both words and visual art merge to describe a 10 year period where the artist felt himself a "prisoner of poetry". The art and poetry share an "abstract"
quality in that they seek an essence from the focus of each piece. The time period is elusive in that it is not a chronology. It is simply a reference that the work is that of a long distance runner. Love in the form of a quest is balanced against self-discovery. Cryptic appraisal of myth is an occasional undertone along with ironic observations which jest at our mortal span. The idea of time as a moment or destiny popup as an unspoken question.

Glen River

River was born in Washington D.C. The family soon moved to Greece where they lived in a suburb of Athens. Demonstrating talent and originality he was encouraged to develop storytelling skills. The family relocated numerous times. Drawings and poetry of new places seemed to help orient and establish a sense of permanence. In the late 1950's and early 60's, the art seemed to take off. "The Work" seemed to become a regular exercise. Painting, songs & poetry became regular activities. Experimentation with block printing introduced the counterpoint of a matrix and original hand. Following his formal education, he lived and worked in Europe and the U.S.A. This produced art, music, and poetry in the United States, England, France, Switzerland, and Greece. His visual artworks include both representational and abstract paintings. Similarly, music and writing formed an eclectic body of work. River continues to be interested in primitive culture and stories about creational myth. A sociological awareness was fostered by his many travels. Ontology continues to influence his art.
