" I started using the advice in this book when I went to parties and stuff like that. It helped me not run away at times I would panic before. I really felt like an idiot sometimes. He is an excellent and compassionate coach. He really helped me overcome my shyness and I really appreciate his help." -Kevin Hunter

Except for psychopaths, and those extremely practiced at overcoming fear, everyone experiences some level of social anxiety.

A healthy level of social anxiety is necessary for a functioning society.

If you break too many norms or anger the wrong people you could be kicked out of your community. When we first started living in groups abandonment could mean death.

When you are a child you feel the same threat to losing social approval. If you misbehave your parents may insist you change your behavior. If they insist with enough anger, it might scare you out of feeling comfortable expressing yourself to them.

This is the beginning of social anxiety.

You don’t want to disappoint your parents because it could threaten your existence. You were worried they would abandon you. So you conform when they yell at you for speaking too loudly in public, or causing any other problems.

In healthy doses this encourages you to behave in socially acceptable ways and prepares you for socializing with your future classmates and friends.

When you get to school however, there is even more pressure from teachers and classmates to conform. You start paying for acceptance by selling bits of your individuality.

Balancing individuality with everyone’s expectations is an inevitable part of life. It’s a processes that forges you into who you are. A lot of people come out of it capable of both expressing themselves and being considerate to expectations of the people around them.

They still feel a bit of social anxiety in certain situations, but usually feel comfortable expressing their own opinion without fear of being judged or rejected.

For many people however, social pressure feels like a massive boulder squashing every bit of individuality into a weak paste of social failure.

If you are reading this book, you may feel this excessive level of social anxiety. You want to express yourself but worry it would mean risking rejection and judgement from others.

If you really want social confidence you will need to face your fears. You will need to break bad habits and think about why you developed them in the first place.

When you encounter opportunities to socialize, it might trigger your fear. Instead of hiding from that fear, realize how awesome it is.

It’s awesome because that fear is showing you what is hiding in your subconscious. If you lived in a safe room your whole life you would never know where the limits of your confidence actually are.

By encountering events that trigger your fear, you get an opportunity for those suppressed emotions to come to the surface.

When this happens, you can finally handle those emotions by reacting appropriately, and examining the reasons they exist in the first place.

Some thinkers, such as author of Walking the Tiger, Peter Levine, theorize that the tension caused by trauma gets stuck in the body when it doesn’t have a chance to act out.

They claim that, for example, if you were teased as a child, and instead of fighting back as you wanted, you remained quiet—that this fight or flight response got stuck inside your subconscious and your body.

You either wanted to run away, or fight back, but you didn’t. The tension and terror remain stuck inside of you. Peter Levine and some similar writers claim that you must consciously visualize those traumatic experiences while imagining that you acted out an appropriate stress response instead of freezing in fear.
