Eight Virtues of Rapidly Growing Churches - Matt Miofsky
INTRODUCTION
WE CAN ALL LEARN FROM CHURCH PLANTERS
A church is not a recipe or a template or a blueprint. It is a mystery. A participant in the mystery of the resurrected and living Christ. We disgrace a mystery when we treat it like a formula to be copied. Instead we should stand in awe of a mystery: admire it, ponder what we stand to learn about God from it, speak about it to others. We hope this book, with its profiles of highly successful church plants, provides rich fodder for your pondering, examples for you to learn from.
There is a right way to learn from other churches and church plants. And there are multiple wrong ways. Wrong ways first— they’re easier.
First, don’t try to copy or replicate exactly what you admire in the churches you read about here. Don’t treat these profiles as formulas, or as easily repeatable procedures that can work in any time and place. Avoid the temptation to think that if you copy what’s done by these churches, you too can have a successful church, envied by your peers, admired at conferences, maybe even linked to a book deal. Don’t get me wrong—there is plenty to learn here, or we wouldn’t have written this book. But we should borrow—not copy—from whatever source we can in our efforts to be faithful. No two flourishing churches will be just alike.
Another wrong way to learn would be to be dismissive. Pshaw—that can’t happen here. Churches often have long memories of experimentation that ended badly, leaving the congregation to opine forever, We tried that. It doesn’t work.
There is something right about this skepticism. As we know from the wrong way
above, not everything will work in every place. Maybe there are some places where nothing will work.
But there is never nothing to be learned. Especially from churches as innovative, creative, and fruitful as the ones we highlight in this book.
What is the right way to learn? Well, in a sense, we are all church planters now. There may have been a day when pastors came out of seminary and started on the pastoral career ladder from associate to small church as a solo pastor to being in charge of multi-staff at a tall steeple. There may have been a day when any batch of people could throw open any set of doors, set out a sandwich board, and folks would flock. But now every church is under duress—the big ones included. Folks don’t just automatically come to church in North America anymore. Children of our most faithful people don’t worship God corporately anymore or don’t with us, and their children often have no experience of church at all, even to rebel against. We have all heard this story of secularization in America, and there can be some good things about it. Equating citizenship with church- going was probably always a bad idea, though it was hard to see that when things were flush. They’re not now. Every church is about ten minutes away from closing. And that’s good. Nothing is immortal except God alone. Churches, like people, come to life in a rush, grow awkwardly, plateau into middle age, and decline—there’s a natural life cycle to such things. A gracious closing is far better than raging against the inevitable. Our system as Methodists has often been really good at keeping dying churches from closing and keeping growing churches from growing more.
But there is grace in all of this. All of us have the opportunity to plant something new in soil fertilized by dead and decaying things. It’s smelly, gross, and difficult work. But something beautiful can grow. In fact, that’s the natural way of things. Healthy things grow. All the more so with the gospel. God seems to delight in upending the natural
life cycle in the Bible—ninety-year-olds have babies, battlefields strewn with bones stand up right and put on flesh again, people on the far side of death are summoned back to life by a word from Jesus, hapless Romans post guards at tombs and still can’t stop resurrection. The good news of God restoring the cosmos through Jesus Christ should fall on glad ears. The church should be naturally compelling, even in times of post-Christendom. Churches like those profiled here can help show us how to garden amidst difficulty, but with delight.
The churches with which we started our research were among the handful that were then the fastest growing congregations in Methodism in America. We focused on Methodism because it is our tribe. The book could have been indefinitely expanded by including other Protestant denominations (for complicated reasons Catholics and Orthodox don’t use the same language or model of planting
as churches of the Reformation). Our evangelical colleagues have spoken of and taken up planting longer and more avidly than we have. Yet among mainline liberal denominations Methodists, at least for now, have the warmest relationships to evangelicals. We don’t mind borrowing from them, and so can show other denominations how to do likewise. We are also not a dogmatically driven church. Some Reformed and Baptist churches that have been plenty invested in church planting have heavy dogmatic statements that must be agreed to in advance before a congregation qualifies as properly church.
We have dogma as Methodists, and robust debates about how important it is and in what way precisely. But we tend to under- emphasize it, for better or worse. We were born as a revivalist renewal movement within our mother church, the Church of England, so at our best we combine emphases that are evangelical, sacramental, and activist in favor of social justice. At our worst we can just be fuzzy and unclear. We hope this book emphasizes our best face: confident in the gospel and open to others.
These churches exhibit a remarkable diversity. Some are in downtown urban cores (Church of the Resurrection Downtown in Kansas City, Missouri). Others are in large urban areas but not within the walkable downtowns (Impact in Atlanta, The Gathering in St. Louis, and Providence in Nashville). Two are in mid-size cities that are growing (Grace Church in Cape Coral, Florida, and Embrace Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota). One is in a far-flung exurb that until ten minutes ago was a rural farming community—Bee Creek Methodist in Spicewood, Texas, outside Austin. These churches are pastored by people who are young and old, male and female, and from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds. They are not, in other words, all hipsters in skinny jeans with ironic facial hair and a thing for smoke machines. They are ordinary pastors with seminary degrees from a variety of institutions from liberal to evangelical, from Methodist to everything-else. They don’t all fit the most likely to succeed
demographic, though it wouldn’t surprise you to see them succeed in whatever endeavor they choose. They’re just surprisingly ordinary. Again don’t get us wrong. They are brilliant! But they are not superhuman. They are more eager to share mistakes than successes. They are slightly baffled by all that has worked
on their watch. We noticed similarities as we talked with them. Patterns. Not recipes. Similar trends that work
to some degree across space and time, with significant outliers that we will note. One common pattern is that these patterns are all worthy of our admiration, respect, and love. They are the best of our tradition and of any Christian tradition. They’re the sort you want at your bedside while dying, at the delivery room while giving birth, at the pulpit on Sunday, at the board meeting proposing a new initiative. There is a reason their churches are growing—and they are part of that
