Love, honor and Dishonour - EJ Hatton
Chapter one
You would never think that the Hussain family would have any problems. They were always friendly, always helping each other when they were in public and always making friends and guests welcome in their home. Everyone knew that they were devoted to their faith, which was Islam, but what they did not know was that behind closed doors, there was always arguments breaking out amongst between Mr and Mrs Hussain and there would be violence between them.
They always made sure that they never hit the most visible part of the body such as the face etcetera. In the Hussain household, there was Mr Hussain and his wife Mrs Hussain. They both have two children. A twenty one years old son called Abz and an eighteen year old daughter called Yasmin.
The usual arguments that breaks out amongst Mr Hussain and Mrs Hussain would be about their daughters arranged marriage, which is about to take place soon and trying to find a suitable wife for their son. Also, another thing that causes rows between them is the little mistakes that Mrs Hussain makes such as the food etcetera.
Even after so many years of being married to Mr Hussain, Mrs Hussain pretty much makes some mistakes on a few things. One time after having a major row with her husband, Mrs Hussain was so upset, angry and scared of her husband that she broke a plate and a cup. Of course this infuriated Mr Hussain so much that he ended up breaking everything in his sight and what he could get his hands on.
The children, of course, was young at the time that they were under their beds, scared out of their wits about what was going on downstairs and they were scared what their father might do next. Now, Mr Hussain had a favourite child and guess who that was. If you have guessed correctly, it is son Abz. He cared and loved his youngest child Yasmin but he loved his son more and he only wanted sons.
The Hussain family and the Ahmed family are related. Mr Hussain and Mr Ahmed are cousins. Both Mr Hussain and Mr Ahmed were one hundred percent proud of their sons because their sons are totally dedicated in their beliefs for Islam but confessed themselves disappointed that their son's is a little more modern in terms of women.
On one nice hot sunny Saturday morning in the south east of London, Mr Ahmed decided it was time to visit his cousin. He had not seen his cousin for a few months.
He went to the phone and tapped in his cousin’s number and waited for his cousin to pick up the phone. Then he heard his cousins wife greet: Hello?
Please do not say that word. Please say the word Salaam.
Spat out Mr Ahmed, in disgust
Sorry. Salaam. How may I help you?
Asked Mrs Hussain, guessing that it was her husband’s cousin.
Salaam. Who is this?
Enquired Mr Ahmed
This is Mrs Hussain.
answered Mrs Hussain
Salaam, sister. I wonder if you remember me but this is Mr Ahmed
Replied Mr Ahmed
Oh, Salaam, Brother. How may I help you? Do you wish to talk to your cousin?
Enquired Mrs Hussain
Yes please, sister
Replied Mr Ahmed
Husband, your cousin’s on the phone!
yelled Mrs Hussain
Thank you.
Yelled back Mr Hussain
Mr Hussain then ran down the stairs and takes the phone from his wife.
Thank you, wife
Said Mr Hussain
Your welcome, husband.
Replied Mrs Hussain, sarcastically
Salaam cousin. How are you?
Asked Mr Hussain, sighing in annoyance at his wife’s disobedience
Salaam cousin. I am fine, thanks to Allah. How are you?
Replied Mr Ahmed
I am fine also, thanks to Allah. How may I help you?
Asked Mr Hussain
I was wondering If I could have permission for myself and my family to visit? Its just that it has been awhile since we have last seen you and your family.
Enquired Mr Ahmed
Of course, cousin. You know that you are welcome around anytime. I agree, cousin, that we have not seen each other for a while. It must be Allah’s will for that to happen.
Remarked Mr Hussain
True, cousin. At least this way we have some information to share with each other every time we meet up. I know for a fact that I am welcome around at anytime but you must know by now that I’d rather ask before coming round.
Pointed out Mr Ahmed
I know. So, what time would you and your family be coming round?
Asked Mr Hussain
Well, I have some appointments this morning but I’ll come around about one this afternoon.
answered Mr Ahmed
Okay, cousin. We’ll look forward to seeing you and your family soon. Goodbye
responded Mr Hussain
Likewise, cousin. See you this afternoon.
Replied Mr Ahmed
They placed the receivers down and that prompted Mrs Hussain to enquire: So, let me guess, your cousin and his family are coming round today then, husband?
Yes. Got a problem with that?
confirmed Mr Hussain, gearing up for an argument
Oh, no. No problems. We always seem to have people over here. So, what’s a few more people?
retorted Mrs Hussain, equally gearing up for an argument.
Good. So, do what you have to do around the house then wife.
Retorted Mr Hussain
Yes, husband.
Retorted back Mrs Hussain
Then, she walked of to do some things around the house.
Bitch.
Muttered Mr Hussain
I heard that, Bastard.
Called Mrs Hussain
What did you call me?
bellowed Mr Hussain
Nothing, husband.
Yelled back Mrs Hussain
Okay.
Muttered Mr Hussain, quietly
He walked into the living room and started throwing things around in order to get rid of the anger and frustration that was slowly building up in him. A few hours later, he finally calmed down and helped his wife to clear up as it was nearing one in the afternoon. His cousin and his family were due at anytime.
Chapter two
At one in the afternoon on the dot, the Hussain family heard the doorbell go. They knew right then that the Ahmed family have arrived. There was also panic in the household, as they had not finished cleaning the house. Then, the door knocked but this time, it was more loudly.
Mr Hussain dashed to the door and opened it and became greeted by the sound of his cousin, laughing: Salaam, cousin. What’s the surprised look for? You knew that we was coming up.
Salaam, cousin. Sorry, sorry. I knew that you and your family were coming up. It’s just that the house is not clean yet.
explained Mr Hussain
Ah, right. May we come in, cousin?
Asked Mr Ahmed
Yes, cousin. Excuse the mess.
Answered Mr Hussain
The Ahmed family walked into the hallway and straight into the living room and saw that there was only a little mess that was still around.
There’s not much mess, cousin.
protested Mrs Ahmed
I know but there is still some mess.
Replied Mrs Hussain
Oh. Would you like some help?
Offered Mrs Ahmed
If you don’t mind.
Answered Mrs Hussain, accepting the offer
Hang on.
protested Both Mr Hussain and Mr Ahmed
What?!
exclaimed both Mrs Hussain and Mrs Ahmed, with irritation in their voices
She is here as a guest. You cannot do that.
objected Mr Hussain, pointing at Mrs Ahmed.
I agree with that, cousin.
Replied Mr Ahmed.
Well, I want to help. Yes, I know for a fact that I am a guest but I want to help. That is no crime that I want to help. After all, she is family.
Pointed out Mrs Ahmed.
True, wife. Okay, you can help.
announced Mr Ahmed, in disgust
Thank you, my dear husband.
Replied an smiling Mrs Ahmed
The women walked out of the living room to do the cleaning.
Uh....papa?
Asked Yasmin and Abz.
Yes?
responded Mr Hussain
Uh....may we leave please? We have some stuff to do.
Asked Yasmin
If I agree to let you both go, you better tell me where you are going and who you are meeting and Yasmin, you better stay away from boys and I mean all boys. You know what is coming up soon.
Responded Mr Hussain, sternly
I know, papa.
Said Yasmin
Good. So, tell me.
Said Mr Hussain
Well, I’m meeting a few of my girlfriends to buy some things for the wedding.
Explained Yasmin
And I’m going to meet a few of the guys to also go to the shopping centre.
Added Abz.
Okay, but be back by six this afternoon.
Replied Mr Hussain
Okay, Thank you, papa.
responded both Yasmin and Abz.
May we join them, papa?
Asked both Ali and Marina.
Yes. If that is okay with your cousins.
Replied Mr Ahmed
Yes, that is okay. Come on Marina and Ali
confirmed both Yasmin and Abz
Thank you, papa.
Said Marina and Ali
That’s okay but be back by the same time as your cousins. You both know what will happen if you don’t come back on time.
Warned Mr Ahmed, sternly
Yes, papa.
Responded both Marina and Ali
The youngsters left the house rather noisily, as Mr Ahmed remarked: Children now a days. They have changed a lot these days. It’s a shame its not like the olden days when the women would stay at home and if they wanted to go out, they would have had the male protection.
I agree, cousin.
agreed Mr Hussain
What is it about Yasmin getting married to a guy called Vikram. I hear his family is a highly respectable family.
Asked Mr Ahmed
Where did you hear about that? Nobody’s supposed to hear about that. Yes, I agree that the Ali family is a highly respectable family. That is why I approached them with the union of marriage of our two respectable families. I’m just pleased that they have accepted.
Asked Mr Hussain, with pride in his voice
There are a lot of rumours going around the community that two people are getting married and they kind of guessed it might be Yasmin and Vikram because nobody’s seen them much.
Explained Mr Ahmed
Ah, right. The reason is because me and my wife and Mr and Mrs Ali did not want Vikram and Yasmin laying eyes on anyone else other than themselves.
explained Mr Hussain.
That's a good plan. When’s the big day?
Asked Mr Ahmed, approvingly
Soon. Mr Ali is going to be on the television in about a day or two to announce it. The wedding is going to be in about two to three days after that. Hopefully. There’s just one little detail to sort out.
Replied Mr Hussain.
What are you two gentlemen talking about?
Asked Mrs Hussain
Both men jumped a mile when they heard Mrs Hussain talk at the doorway and before too long, they burst out laughing once the shock has worn off.
How long have you been standing there?
Asked Mr Hussain, still laughing to himself
For a couple of minutes. I thought we agreed to never to discuss the wedding until the groom’s father made the announcement on the television.
explained Mrs Hussain, sternly
What wedding?
Asked a surprise Mrs Ahmed when she entered the living room What are you laughing about, you two fools?
Both men were still laughing after they thought back
