This is the fifth book in the 'Aotearoa' series. Teenage adept Matiu Douglas is still honing his skills. His friend Riki is away on a school trip to Parihaka as part of their study of the passive resistance protest's that took place there in the 1880s. He is tricked, however, and taken back to Aotearoa’s Parihaka where the real protest is still happening over and over again in an endless cycle. Along with other prisoners he is captured and taken on board a slave ship. On board is John Bryce, a real character from New Zealand history, but in Aotearoa an evil tohunga makutu. Matiu sets out to rescue his friend before it is too late. He must also deal with the fact that, although he loves the seer Everelda, he has been chosen by Aroha (Hine-ahu-one/the first woman; Hine-te-po/the Goddess of Death) as her mate. Matiu has no choice in the matter and getting close to Evie puts her in terrible danger so they must keep their feelings hidden. It's great to see a real historical conflict brought to life in a fictional book. There was no mention of the rapes that took place by the soldiers who were part of the conflict though. A good read.
