    The Secret - Kent Hamilton

    A New Neighbor

    We've got a new neighbor!

We do? Kathy’s head shot up from where she had been darning Paul’s shirt.

Who is it? Sarah asked, getting to her feet to pour the men a cup of coffee.

Daniel sauntered over, a smile on his face as he kissed Sarah soundly, before answering her question. Man called Matthew.

Sarah blushed, a slight smile on her lips as she poured her fiancée a cup, before offering one to Paul.

    Why’s he here?

Paul shrugged. Seems he's been needing to make a new life for himself and decided to start over.

He’s building a cabin, Daniel interrupted, his eyes still on Sarah. Seems he’ll be needing help once ours is done. He’s bought the plot next to ours, Sarah. There’s a cabin there already but it’s going to be turned into the stable since it needs so many repairs.

Kathy glanced at Paul, seeing him nod in answer to her unasked question. We’ll both be helping him, of course.

Kathy said nothing, turning her eyes back to her sewing. She barely saw Paul these days, given how busy he was helping Daniel build his cabin for him and Sarah, and Sarah's baby, David. Kathy sighed inwardly, realizing how much

she was going to miss Sarah when she was gone. It would only be another week she'd have her here and then they'd move to the cabin on the same day as

the wedding. Whilst Kathy was delighted for her friend, she knew she'd feel her loss keenly. If only Paul wasn't being so stubborn!

Oh! She started, dropping her needle and placing a hand on her stomach. That was a big one!

That baby’s got Paul’s strength, Daniel joked, sliding an arm around Sarah’s waist. Bound to be a boy!

Or a feisty girl! Sarah exclaimed, digging an elbow into Daniel’s ribs.

Daniel laughed, kissing her cheek once more before going in search of something to eat. Sarah watched him for a moment, before coming back to sit across from Kathy. Can I get you something?

No, I’m fine, thank you, Kathy replied, shifting a little in her chair. I’m only six months gone and already this baby wants to force its way into the world. Sometimes the kick would take her breath away, and she would smile at the little

life developing within her. It was both an incredible and terrifying experience, and she just wished that Paul would share it with her. She was beginning to feel incredibly lonely.

Well, you just keep it in there a little longer, Sarah chuckled, a twinkle in her eye. The last few months are always the worst if I remember rightly! Her

face lit up with the memories of her own pregnancy, before her first husband had gone completely off the rails and ended up dead. David, their son, was all she had to remember him by – but with Daniel by her side, and her cabin

almost finished, Sarah was glad that her life was about to take a turn for the better.

I’m sure it will all be worth it, Kathy replied, a little dreamily. That boy of yours is pure delight!

That he is, Daniel interrupted, a hand on Sarah’s shoulder. Kathy smiled at him, wondering at the change that had come over him in the last few months.

It had been all because of Sarah, of course, but Daniel had changed from a lazy, good-for-nothing layabout to a man who’s hard work and determination made him the talk of the town. Everyone had been commenting on how he’d

turned his life around. He’d even taken little David under his wing, treating him as if he were his own son.
