    CHAPTER ONE

    THE CASE OF THE MISSING TELESCOPE

    Zoey… That’s my name. Zoey Z. Parks, in fact. I’m a kid. And, I live in Blue Ribbon, Oregon. I guess you could call me the kid-attorney. I represent friends and classmates who need my help. An innocent kid gets into a bind, and I come along and plead their case. Something unfair or suspicious happens and I look into the matter. My clients are mostly kids—just like me. My office is in the park where my class has recess. While other kids are playing kick-ball or tag, I am beneath an old oak tree helping clients.

    One Tuesday afternoon, I was picking up old candy wrappers near my office—before I took a seat, and out of nowhere, Henry Long (a 6th grader at Hasselworth Elementary) plopped down beneath the tree.

    They think I did it, he said.

    We both sat quietly for a moment. By the time I’d worked up enough nerve to ask him what he was talking about, recess was almost over. Even then, Henry wouldn’t say much, and when the bell rang he shuffled back inside with
