About this ebook

"The author is an assured fantasy writer, and his prose rolls on without affect or pretense.... A lengthy new fantasy series that gets off to an auspicious start." --Kirkus reviews

Hagenspan was a mythic land that once existed in our own world--nearest estimates place it somewhere in the north Atlantic, perhaps during the Middle Ages. Apparently one of the last bastions for creatures from the Old World, its shores were haunted by memories of dwarfs and fairies, kobolds and trolls, giants and dragons. The tales of Hagenspan recount the days when humankind had nearly, but not quite, forgotten those other folk, who were diminishing as it had been decreed. The Hagenspan Chronicles are a bittersweet recounting of the world that once was; sometimes whimsical, sometimes heroic, sometimes heart-rending.

In this, the first installment of the Roarke’s Wisdom cycle that represents the first four books in the series, we are introduced to Sir Cedric Roarke, a humble and thoughtful man, who has incidentally killed three dragons. When all of the rest of the world was unable to defeat these terrible beasts, he was victorious. In spite of this, he has found no real fame, nor would he have been inclined to seek it had he thought of it. Still, he is lonely, and he longs to find not just purpose or reward, but that which is ultimately the search of every wise man--an understanding of God.

In his searches, he acquires a squire and a company of new friends, encounters brigands who would rob him of what he won from the dragon that he most recently defeated, and deals with the smaller issues of establishing a household and settling a town in the ruined area formerly ruled by the dragon. The story presents a fascinating look at the workings of true wisdom as Roarke displays the nobility of his character time and again.

This book, The Defense of Blythecairne, presents a complete and satisfying tale within its pages, but it begs the reader to go on nonetheless, as The Courtship of Hollie awaits, where we will start realizing the answer to Roarke’s longing for companionship of a softer variety.
