    Jessica unlocked the back door of the cafe and locked it behind her quickly in the dimly lit coat room. It was pitch black outside and this part of town felt creepy at midnight. She punched her card into the time clock. Then in one smooth move extricated her jacket out from under her purse, hanging the jacket up on a hook. She grabbed a clean white apron and two clean white towels from their respective piles. They smelled like bleach, sterilized from their previous uses. Health Department clean.

    She walked through the dimly lit kitchen section and out into the cafe proper, putting her purse down on an empty table. The prevailing smell was tomato sauce. It must have been veggie lasagne for the special tonight. Her stomach roiled at the scent, but she ignored it. This was her breakfast and lasagne didn’t smell good.

    The cafe was a rather funky place. Built in two different storefronts, with two connecting doors, it seemed like a maze of areas. The
