Andrea Pearson

Andrea, a Brigham Young University graduate, is an avid reader and outdoor enthusiast (hiking, fishing, boating, biking, spending time in the Rocky Mountains, and taking walks). She spent a year and a half serving the Spanish speaking community in Toronto, Canada, and is fluent in 2 1⁄2 languages. She plays several instruments, not including the banjo, and loves putting together musical arrangements. Her favorite sports are basketball and football, though several knee surgeries and incurably awful coordination prevent her from playing them.Andrea is always in the mood for a good movie with close friends and family (especially her husband and mom), with a large glass of milk and a bowl of overly buttered popcorn nearby. She also enjoys oil painting, making earrings, squeezing every bit of oxygen out of Ziploc bags, and she hopes to someday travel to Italy and Alaska.Andrea has published three books.

    Chapter One

Carter kicked the ball, watching as it soared across the field toward his friend Amber. She caught it easily with her foot and ran with it, keeping it on its path to the goal. With a perfectly aligned kick, she sent the ball to the net.

Ridge, Carter’s former best friend and now mostly enemy, dove through the air to block the ball, but missed it by several inches.

Carter’s team erupted in cheers, ignoring Ridge’s yell of frustration. They’d won against Ridge for the first time! He dashed across the field, piling on top of the other members of his team, each of them laughing and shouting.

The games during lunch at junior high were informal, so the victory wouldn’t end up on any charts, but it still felt good.

Ridge was still yelling. He stormed over to them, grabbing Carter and pulling him from the other players. Amber cheated! And you helped her!

Are you serious? By scoring? What was wrong with Ridge? His team hadn’t ever lost! Why was this upsetting him so much?

How did I cheat? Amber asked, joining them.

I don’t know! You just did. You always do in these stupid games. Ridge’s face was red, and his fists were clenched at his side.

Carter shook his head. There’s no way she broke the rules. She kicked the ball. It went into the net.

Ridge stepped up to Carter’s face. Shut your mouth, Carter.

Carter refused to be quiet. No. You’re accusing my friend of doing something she didn’t. He motioned to the rest of the players. Everyone saw. You can’t win this fight.

Ridge shoved Carter, and he stumbled backward into another player.

Knock it off, Ridge, Carter warned. Fighting at school was against the rules, but Carter wasn’t going to let the guy bully him around.

And what are you going to do? Ridge said, stepping up to Carter and shoving him again, hard enough that he fell to the grass.

Carter’s face burned as he scrambled to his feet. Why did there always have to be a crowd when Ridge acted out? He thought hard, trying to figure out what to say to talk Ridge down. Without warning, Ridge’s fist flew through the air, smacking him in the jaw.

Pain erupted through Carter’s face and skull, bright colors flashed in his vision, and he put his hand over his cheek. It took him a moment to clear his thoughts and remember where he was. Anger flashed, and he bounced forward, fists up.

Just then, Miss Josephine White called out for them to stop, striding across the field, madder than a cat when a strange dog invades its space.

Ridge! she said. I saw that!

Ridge turned to the teacher, an innocent expression on his face. What are you talking about? I didn’t do anything. He started it! Ridge pointed at Carter.

Carter winced as he opened his mouth to respond. That punch was going to leave a bruise. "I didn’t, Miss Josephine. Ridge wanted a fight. You can ask the others—they’ll agree."
