      NICA BARROWS WAS LOST in the crystal’s striations, following their swirling paths through the stone, when Aurora Maybanks walked into the Cadre’s large training room. I understand my father wants a vampire containment team sent to Wolvesrain, Aurora said.

      Nica shook off the remnants of the meditative state she’d been fully immersed in and stood to face the woman who was, for all intents and purposes, running the Cadre—an organization established four hundred years ago to study and research paranormal beings and to keep the world safe from non-human entities. Yes. Damien has been dispatched to Wolvesrain. He has agreed to bring Miss McGovern back to St. Yve and assess the threat from Asmos and the vampire clan.

      Aurora raised a skeptical brow. Do you really think Damien can be unbiased? That vermin vampire clan is led by his brother, Nicholai.
