    Trepalli's Christmas - Marcelle Dube

    TREPALLI’S CHRISTMAS

    Marcelle Dubé

    ––––––––

The kids seemed to be having a blast. From where he sat in his patrol car, drinking coffee from a thermos cup and munching on a ham and cheese sandwich, Marco Trepalli counted at least twenty of them all sliding down Paddy’s Hill or trudging back up. He could hear their shrieking even over the noisy car heater.

He glanced up at the leaden sky as the fat flakes swirled slowly around the car, so dry they didn’t even stick to his windshield.

In the summer, kids congregated at Paddy’s Pond, just past the screen of trees at the bottom of the hill, but come winter, the hill was the star.

Usually there were a few adults along, keeping an eye on the kids, especially the younger ones. On this Christmas Eve day, however, kids were off school while a lot of parents were still at work, which meant the older kids were looking after the younger ones.

It was cold out there—minus fifteen Celsius, according to his dashboard display. And windy. He shivered reflexively and set the thermos cup back in its holder and wrapped up the remainder of his sandwich.

Time to get back on patrol.

He had parked on a farmer’s access road. A man by the name of Kowalski—not Paddy—owned the farm but he let kids use the sloping land just off the access road. That was a kindness, as there weren’t many sledding hills in Mendenhall, Manitoba.

Marco’s phone sat in its holder on the dashboard and he fiddled with the buttons on his steering wheel until the phone connected with the detachment.

Mendenhall Police, came Chief Kate Williams’ voice over the speakers.

Hi, chief, he said, carefully executing a three-point turn on the narrow road. It’s Trepalli. I’m back on patrol.

All right, Marco, she said cheerfully. I’ll let Olinchuk know.

Marco disconnected and continued on his way, wondering idly how long the kids would stay out. The parents probably hoped the exercise would tire them out so they would get to sleep at a decent hour on the night before Christmas.

It cheered him up to see all those kids having fun. Made him forget that he’d been an idiot to expect the jeweler to be ready with the ring in time for him to propose to Amanda on Christmas day.

The jeweler, Mr. Maloof, had warned him that there probably wasn’t enough time, though he promised to try.

All you young men, the old
