C01Maybe you’ll get married, maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll have children. Maybe you won’t. Maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary.
–Mary Schmich
I may be the one writing this book, but you are the one with a story to tell. Nobody over the age of 40 who jumps back into the dating world can say they’re free of drama and baggage. I get it, trust me! My story reads more like a Stephen King novel than it does a Disney musical. Maybe you think your own story shares a similar trend. I’m here to tell you you aren’t alone, not by a long shot.
We can’t banish those tough life experiences, and in most cases, why would we want to? Those experiences are our lives. In some cases, that difficult first marriage resulted in the children you love so much. Perhaps you’re widowed and simply cannot imagine replacing the husband you still love today. While these experiences have colored your life, they may also be holding you back from dating. They may be chipping away at your confidence even now, making you think you’re un-dateable.
I’m here to tell you no matter what baggage you’re bringing to the table, you are a catch and men out there want to date you! I’m serious! The single most important takeaway from this chapter is that you are dateable. No matter what you’ve been through, no matter what your ex-husband, ex-lover, ex-whatever said about you, you are 100% unique hot stuff!
This Ain’t No Fairytale
Life isn’t a Disney movie. We aren’t living in a Nicholas Sparks novel. God is not a romantic comedy writer scripting you as the protagonist in his next big blockbuster hit. You’re simply you, complete with baggage, a job, kids and more ex-lovers than you’d care to relate to mom.
Furthermore, all those perfect marriages
that you know in real life aren’t perfect. They’re flawed, difficult, and frustrating. The only difference between your life and theirs is that they close their windows and doors before they start yelling at each other. They air out their dirty laundry in the backyard behind 6-foot walls. They probably fell into love just as you may have. They didn’t test the waters for long and they spent more time as someone’s better half
than they did as their own complete whole.
In order to find an awesome guy, you’ll need to feel comfortable being without one. I recommend this to all women, not just the ones who have recently left a long-term relationship. If you don’t take the time to understand your own value, you’ll never be successful in the dating world, let alone the relationship world. Confidence is everything, and this chapter will provide the seeds to make that confidence possible.
What is Your Worst Fear When It Comes to Dating at This Age?
Go ahead, answer the question above. It’s going to be the first thing that comes to mind. It’s also going to be your biggest excuse for staying away from dating. Why? Because this is where you also fear being rejected the most. This is where you feel rejection would hurt the most.
