    Chapter One: The Upset

    Max was only vaguely aware of his wife Helen answering the door as he played Super Smash Brothers Melee with their two sons. William, age thirteen, was dominating his little brother Sean, age ten, and they were both mopping the floor with Max. Max was the first to go out, followed by Sean, leaving William the winner.

    Max sighed. He used to be able to beat them both. Once William got good, Max could still at least stay competitive with Sean, but even those days seemed to be over now. He still wasn’t sure Sean wasn’t just randomly wailing on the buttons.

    Is this a good stopping point? Helen asked as she stood behind the couch, well aware the round was over.

    No! the boys yelled in unison.

    Yes, please, Max said.

    Helen reached over and waved an envelope in front of Max’s face. You have a telegram.

    A what?

    What’s a telegram? Sean asked as Max took and opened the envelope.

    It’s how extremely old people used to communicate, William said.

    Gee, thanks, Max said. He looked over the telegram. Huh, it’s from Beaker. That’s a name I haven’t heard in a while. Oh my god. He slunk into the couch, his controller sliding off his lap onto the cushion. His eyelids drooped as he stared straight ahead. His family could tell it was bad.

    Max, what is it? Helen said, grabbing the piece of paper. She read the message:

    FIFTY-ONE STOP

    Max, what is fifty-one? What does this mean?

    Max took a deep breath and
