About this ebook

She expected a calm summer. He expected his degree. His father's arrest and unbalanced books changes all that. Will he sum up danger or love?

Sadie Jean had a calm summer planned working for the Utah Forest Service in Utah. But, a deliberately set fire sends her racing on her horse up the mountain with her Border collie in tow and flames on their tail. Who set the fire and why?

Colton has given up the ranch lifestyle for a college degree in accounting. When his little brother breaks his arm and can't help run the ranch, Colton returns home to lend a hand. He takes on a part-time job at a seed company handling their accounts but soon learns the books aren't in order. When his father is wrongfully arrested for setting the forest fire, the crisis escalates!

    Dedication

To my beta readers—Debbie, Wendy and Karryn—

Thank you for all your wonderful help and suggestions. I couldn’t do it without you.

    Prologue

SHHHH, WYATT SAMSON told his brother, holding his finger to his lips and sloshing his beer. We don’t want anybody to hear.

He had just confessed his plan to his brother, Clete. Maybe he shouldn’t have done it in the middle of the Starlight Bar and as drunk as he was, but he had to do something and something fast. He didn’t want to end up with two broken legs like that guy in Mesquite.

That’s crazy talk, Wyatt. We can’t do that, Clete said. He chugged down the rest of his beer.

This is for the old man.

If he could convince Clete he was doing it for Pa, he might be able to get him to go along with his plan. Clete didn’t need to know that Wyatt was desperate for the money to pay back a gambling debt, at least not if he could get his hands on enough money to pay back Jackson before he sent a couple of collectors after him—collectors with brass knuckles and nunchakus.

Clete leaned across the table. It’s crazy. Just crazy. He nervously looked around the noisy room.

You said so yourself that the last couple of years have been too good to bring in much business for the seed company. He lowered his voice. A fire would solve everything.

Pa wouldn’t want the business that way.

Wyatt grabbed him by the shirt. Pa’s not gonna know a thing about it. You know we can’t even pay the bills or taxes this year. He darted a look around this time. Pa’s one of the pillars of the town. What would everyone think if they knew he was almost broke? This would just stir up some business for the company and keep Pa in good standing. He released Clete’s shirt and leaned back. It’s not like we’re doing it for ourselves.

Clete pondered the thought and nodded his head. I’ve never seen Pa so stressed.

Now he had him hooked. Right, right. We’ll be lightening his load. Don’t have to be too big, just enough for the BLM to need seed for reseeding. He threw some money on the table. Let’s go. We’ve got plans to make.

Clete followed him like a good younger brother.

He would have Jackson’s money to him very soon. Very soon.

    Chapter One

SADIE JEAN DIXON GEARED her Dodge truck down as she hit the base of Juniper Canyon. Looking in her side mirror, she checked how Dusty was handling the ride in the horse trailer. Not that this little jaunt should bother him. He had ridden back there some eight hundred miles all the way from Dalhart, Texas to get to central Utah.

Gypsy, her Border collie, paced on the passenger’s seat, her startling sky-blue eyes filled with excitement at the sights of the new terrain.

You’re going to wear yourself out before we even get there, she told Gypsy.

Gypsy closed her mouth for a second, looked at her like she was crazy, and then went back to panting and pacing.

Sadie sighed. She had been thrilled to get this forestry technician position right out of college with so few jobs available. She had jumped at the chance without considering what it would be like without her family and friends near. Gypsy and Dusty were great, but once in a while it would be nice to talk to someone who could carry on a conversation. Most of the time, it didn’t bother her though. She liked the solitude of the mountains, fresh air, and the laidback lifestyle forestry afforded her. No pent-up corporate office in some big city for her. This was the life.

Her dream job was Forester, and she knew she would get there soon enough. The lack of jobs and the poor economy played into her options right now, and this job had been a godsend. Getting a year or two of experience under her belt would help her get a Forester position anywhere she wanted. And, she didn’t mind the thought of it being right here. Utah contained beautiful mountains with hunting, fishing, boating and snow sports, and the red rock splendor of Arches and Canyonland National Parks, and even sand dunes in the west desert near the Great Salt Lake.

She grimaced at the houses and farms taking over the canyon. Why did civilization have to keep encroaching on forestland? Humans contributed as much
