Star Destiny Episode Five - Odette C. Bell

    Chapter 1

    Williams

Williams had to get off this ship, and he had to do it now.

Though the scanners of his old armor had taken a hell of a beating when Fray’a had blasted them, they were still functional enough to warn him that the ship had suddenly gone into a self-destruct sequence. It wasn’t audible, but there was distinct energy picking up through the vessel, concentrating in the engine cores. Williams didn’t need to be a genius to appreciate that when Parin had disappeared, he’d obviously transported off the ship, and a bastard like Parin didn’t allow their vessel to fall into their enemy’s hands.

Dammit, Williams spat under his breath, holding Celena’s unconscious form harder against his chest.

Every few seconds as he ran forward, he allowed his gaze to tilt down and lock on her, because he’d finally done the seemingly impossible.

She was back. Unconscious and injured, but back.

He didn’t allow himself to become completely distracted by that thought. Gritting his teeth, he reached the end of the corridor. Rather than open the massive metal doors in front of him, he just rounded his shoulder, twisted to the side, and slammed into it.

He protected Celena. Fortunately his armor was incredible enough that even in the few short seconds since his fight had ended it had already started to rebuild itself. He had absolutely no idea what race the stuff came from, but he could appreciate that the level of technological sophistication they’d achieved was far greater than anything he’d ever seen.

His mind had a moment for a treacherous thought.

If Susie really did have more of this technology, maybe they did have a chance of not just taking on the Duke, but taking on the Emperor, too. Maybe this was the start of the war the universe had been waiting to have for millennia?

Keep your mind on the game, Williams snapped to himself as the door blasted around him. The metal dented, flying over his side as he plowed through with all the force of a bullet. He instantly crumpled his body further around Celena, ensuring not even a scrap could strike her.

Though she looked as if she’d endured hell, she was alive. She was actually alive.

Williams had never felt relief like this. Because Williams’ heart had never been on the line like it was now.

As he ran through the ship, looking for a place where he could contact Susie and transport out of here, he allowed his mind to appreciate what he’d just thought.

Celena had sunk her hooks into his heart like no one else ever had. No, not her hooks. She hadn’t done it. She hadn’t wended her way in like some kind of virus or pathogen. He’d allowed her in. For a man who’d always been as standoffish as Williams, somehow it had taken the greatest assassin in all of the universe to give him a reason to open up.

Now he was open, he was never going to close himself off ever again.

As he thought that, he crumpled her closer to his chest.

Come on, he begged aloud. There has to be somewhere around here I can contact Susie from.

When Parin had left, he’d obviously put some kind of communication jamming field in place. Though Williams was desperately trying to get off a message, it didn’t matter. No matter where he ran, no matter what his armor tried to do, he couldn’t penetrate the jamming field.

The self-destruct sequence was building. Though it had been silent until now, suddenly an alarm cracked through the air louder than a lightning strike right by his ear.

He was forced to tilt his head to the side, clench his teeth, and wince. It was all he could do as the alarm continued to blare through the ship.

Williams had no idea where the rest of the crew were. He assumed there had to be other crew members left on the ship. He’d seen and heard them back when he first transported here. But what had happened to them? Had they all transported off? Or were they just expendable pieces, like Parin had always been playing a game of chess with their lives?

Williams knew the answer, didn’t he? Because once upon a time, he’d been one of those expendable pieces, too. Though as a member of the Imperial Forces you liked to think that you were valued, you weren’t. You were valuable. You could be used, but you had no inherent worth yourself. The people who ruled over you didn’t care if one soldier died. There would always be another to take your place.

That realization sent a cold feeling shifting through Williams’ heart. It descended from the top of his chest down into his stomach, then down into his legs until it felt as if it was draining out of the bottom of his feet.

Maybe it was the last scrap of his loyalty – the last fragment of goodwill he had for the man he’d once been.

In its place, he felt determination rise like fire through his chest. It was a power he needed now more than ever.

As he sprinted down another corridor and faced another door, he didn’t even pause. His armor was now re-knitting over him, the invisible force field that extended a few centimeters above his skin becoming so strong, it felt like he could swim through space. He didn’t need to swim through the merciless void now, though – he goddamn had to get to a place where he could get off a communication. Now the alarm blared through the ship, he didn’t need his scanners to tell him how far away the self-destruct was. The computer started to count down.

One minute until the cores overload.

    Dammit, he spat.

He hadn’t come this far, sacrificed this much, and snatched Celena back from the jaws of death just to give up on her now.

Though he made a quick, crazy calculation about whether he could survive the destruction of this ship with his armor, Celena wouldn’t be able to survive. Though he could potentially extend his force field around her, he knew it wouldn’t make any difference. If the cores of this massively powerful vessel imploded, they would take everything around them with them. They’d probably suck space for a good hundred-kilometer radius into a mini blackhole.

Even if Williams somehow managed to survive that with his armor, it would only be a momentary thing. The lack of oxygen and any other life-sustaining process would ensure it would be lights-out. And if it was lights-out, the rest of the universe would lose this chance to rise up against Imperial rule.

Williams opened his mouth one last time to scream out a desperate swearword.

That would be when the floor beneath him buckled. It happened so suddenly, there was nothing he could do. He thrust to the side and rolled, managing to just avoid a sharp piece of metal that could’ve skewered Celena in his arms.

He rolled down the section of the floor until he struck the wall. His feet slammed against it, the resounding blast echoing out like someone throwing cymbals down from the heavens. What the hell was that? he spat as if he had a connection to the main computers of this vessel and they would accept an information request from him.

They sure as hell didn’t accept his input, but obviously the ship was giving public updates anyway. Structural integrity is being lost as the gravitational drives shut down. The crew have 30 seconds to get to the escape pods.

    30 seconds?

    30 goddamn seconds?

Williams almost fell to his knees.

There was nothing he could do.

    Nothing—

    Celena started to shift.

The first thing he was aware of was the caress of her breath as she took a shallow gasp. It pushed against his cheek, and it felt like fingers taking hold of his face.

    Celena?

She shouldn’t be waking up. Not after what she’d gone through. But nor should he be standing here, waiting with bated breath to see if her eyes would flicker open. The ship was crumbling down around his ears, but all he wanted to do was see her open her eyes one last time.

The floor continued to sway, acting more like a wave in a stormy ocean than stable ground.

He was forced backward, and he rolled over a section of wall, coming to a stop with his back against a massive window that looked out into space beyond. "Celena? Celena?"

Blearily, she opened her eyes and stared at him. It took a fraction of a second for recognition to flood her features. Williams? Somehow she shifted her broken body and crumpled her arms around his.

Before Williams had a chance to do anything, the computer let out another earsplitting blare. There is no longer time to get to the escape pods. Those crew who are still on the ship will die in approximately 30 seconds.

Williams opened his mouth to explain what was happening. He needn’t have bothered. Without a word, Celena reached up, clamped her hands over her Ares’ Daughter cuffs, and removed them.

They were now obviously so degraded that she didn’t need his help to remove them.

    Celena, he stuttered.

How long can you survive in space with that armor? she spat just as the wall around them started to ripple as if
