Beginners Of Nowhere - Sir Patrick Bijou

    Prologue

After several years of fighting for independence from the G8 countries, Newland emerges as the new theocracy in the modern world. President Galvado Kent rules his country with an iron hand and stands against the influence of Science.

Surgery is forbidden, so is blood transfusion and other medical procedures that are against the Holy Laws of Newland. There is a rise in the death toll of women and children, but the President and his advisors turn a blind eye to the current deaths in the country.

However, there is a growing dissatisfaction among some people, who consider humanity before fanatical religion.

One of such people include Indiana Legolas, a woman with a strong will and a great intent to break away from this hypocritical contraption and set the people free even at the cost of her own life.

Day and night, she works on a solution to humanity’s greatest enemy: death. But years after her demise, the solution she had created turns out to be the very same thing that would bring doom upon the earth.

The earth is becomes a dead zone as humans struggle to cohabit with the hybrids (creations from Indiana’s work). Soon, the prophecy of an overheating earth comes to reality, and the human population is on the verge of extinction. There is only one planet for everyone to go…but how do they begin from nowhere?

How do they build from what wasn’t?

The survivors need salvation, but who would lead the way?

    BEGINNERS

    OF

    NOWHERE

    Part 1

(In the beginning was the light…)

    Chapter One

The hallway which led to the most beautiful hall in the Red house flooded with guests, who were mostly men of prestige in Newland, decision makers, and religious leaders. The Rosa Mystique hall was decked with a thousand of roses in variant colors- blue, red, white and pink.

Ribbons were sprawled across the walls as well as balloons. This was a great occasion, and the leader of the new world made certain that the Independence of the Republic which they had forged was celebrated year after year.

The laughter of men and women of class rumbled through the enormous hall, which occupied more than five hundred people at the moment; more we still trooping in.

Waiters who were dressed in the red and white clothes, which were signature colors of the republic made sure all the wine glasses, were filled to the brim and all of the guests were attended to.

The citizens of the new republic had gathered to commemorate the day in which they had conquered the G8 countries of the old world, to forge a world where faith was merged with Capitalism.

Before their triumph, the G8 countries which had China as their leader had fought desperately to overthrow the fighters of the new world; but they had failed.

Galvado Kent was a chief theologian, and a man schooled in administrative management. He had been a senior congressman in the United States of America, along with three of his most trusted councilmen- James Harper, Druman Elarion and Fabian Dickson.

He was a pragmatic and an ambitious man. He was unsatisfied with the corruptness in values and leadership that had taken over the old world, and he was desperate to change it.

The only way forward was to break away from the old order of doing things, and creating a new world that would favor the predominance of one religion, which to him lay the salvation of Mankind.

At first, his gospel of a new world spread slowly, but eventually, they garnered a lot of support from other political leaders and solid backing from the religious leaders of the old world, this was how the Country of Newland came into being.

‘Good evening Newlanders!’A slender woman took to the stage of the Rosa Mystique Hall.

She wore a sequin dress with large embroidery of roses and a golden necklace on her long neck. Her piercing blue eyes clashed with the wild lights in the hall, while the pink lipstick she had worn had been wiped off from too much wine sipping.

This woman was Nancy Kent, and she was the wife of the President of Newland.

At the sound of her voice, everyone went quiet. Laughter receded to the background, and the ushers scurried to a safe place to keep watch, as was the norm whenever the President or any figure of authority was on stage.

Good evening, First Lady, The people chorused.

‘Thank you,’ she ran a tongue over her lips and smiled, ‘I am so sorry Newlanders for tonight. My husband and some of his men in the council would not be here for the celebration, but we will still commemorate this day and honor those who lay their lives for Newland to become a reality.’ She paused and snapped her fingers.

A young blonde girl rushed towards her with a tray of roses, a goblet, and a bible.

‘Thank you, darling.’ She murmured and grabbed the tray from her.

‘As you can see, these three symbols have kept us going in this country. The rose is of great importance to our land and our beliefs. Newland is a beautiful country, with layers of promise and potential. But to enjoy the good of the land…you must drink of the Lord’s wine…’ she paused and raised the goblet.

Every month, Newlanders gathered in this great hall for the confession of their sins and the taking of the Holy Communion. If one was found guilty of any heinous crime, they were being punished, but if the crime were against one’s own body, he would be forgiven and served the communion.

She dropped the goblet gently, and raised the Bible, ‘This book is of utmost importance to us. It is the book upon which the foundation of Newland was written. If you fail to abide by the rules, the thorns from this beautiful rose will make you bleed.

Isn’t our Lord fair enough, to offer us great freedom and happiness here?

A world that is not polluted by Science and its dangers, a world free from sexual pervasion and the likes?’

Faithful is he! The crowd murmured and cheered.

‘Thank you for believing in my husband and his men in council. Let us now drink to the future of Newland. Let us drink to the faithfulness of our Lord!’ She raised the goblet in the tray which contained some wine and waited for the guests to join her.

To Newland, the land of our Lord!

The guests gulped their drink swiftly and broke into dancing as the flute player began to blow a beautiful tune, which was pleasing to the ears.

It was the Holy Land, the national Anthem of Newland and mostly played on significant occasions like this.

At a far corner, a woman whose face was hidden in the cloak she wore watched in contempt and annoyance, the display on the dance floor, which she considered foolish.

Indiana Legolas had been one of the victims of the Civil War that had taken place between the old world and Newland. Like a good number of people living here, she had been kidnapped and forced to become a citizen. Once in Newland, always in Newland, as there was no route of escape except to the dead lands, which was a place where poisonous serpents were reared.

Underneath her cloak was denim, a yellow top, and black boots. Her wide hips protruded out of the jeans while the top clung to her full breasts.

Her dark brown skin was flawless and smooth; maybe this was what had attracted James to her in the first place.

She chuckled as she thought of her secret lover whom she missed greatly.

‘More…’ she whispered to the usher next to her. The bald man quickly refilled her glass and moved away.

She ran a tongue over her lips as the sourness of the wine slapped her cheeks. She ignored the sour tasting wine and continued to feed her deep brown eyes with the dancing of the high-class members of Newland.

‘Hypocrites, all of them,’ She scoffed.

Legolas was the Chief Scientist that was appointed to control the medical departments of Newland. She was trained in Microbiology as well, but since the Christian State prohibited the use of scientific methodology, she was literally useless like the rest of her team.

Indiana was a very strong-willed woman who believed that the contraption of Newland was a farce and in no time would fade into oblivion. She was not comfortable living in a place like this, but she had no choice.

So many times, she had thought of running away, but whenever she remembered her little daughter and other kids she lived to save, she changed her mind.

Tears sprang up in her eyes as she remembered the little girl that had died in her care two nights ago.

    ‘Dora,’ she whispered the name.

The eight-year-old had died because of a kidney problem which could have easily been averted by a kidney transplant, but the laws of Newland were strongly against surgery of any kind.

‘Fuck ‘em.’ She tossed the glass she held on a table slab next to her.

There had to be a way to defeat President Kent and his council of idiots. They had to be a way to set these people free, and she had been working on that.

A chill ran down her spine as she felt someone watching her, she had not been invited to this party like other scientists, but she had lied to get into the party. She had come to see James; she missed him. Also, she needed to get more info from him that way she will know what exactly to do with her plans.

Her eyes met directly with the steely face of Nancy Kent, the First Lady. Indiana swallowed and quickly looked away.

She had to leave at once, somehow, somewhere…

‘Shit.’ She pulled the cloak tighter over her head and rushed towards the exit, but it was too late.

Nancy had already sent two soldiers after her; her heart skipped as she remembered that the punishment of stepping into the Red Hall without invitation was death by stoning.

For the first time in her thirty-eight years on earth, Indiana Legolas prayed.

    ‘Lord help me.’

    Chapter Two

The Red House was the sacred abode of the President and his family.

It was dissected into different apparitions, each for a distinct purpose. The Rosa Mystique Hall was meant for State parties and other celebrations while the Lair of Daniel was meant for political deliberations.

The room was dimly lit with a lot of wooden chairs. The strong smell of sandalwood and dried roses permeated the atmosphere of the decision.

‘Ignore them; they are trying to implicate us. We do what we have always done, ignore!’ Elder Statesman Elarion Druman, a sturdy bald headed middle age man, suggested.

Though Newland was a sovereign state, the G8 countries who were not pleased with its inception were always throwing stones at her.

Recently, reports of Newland being a fanatical state which abhorred the use of Science and encourages the suppression of Fundamental Human Rights had reached the United Nations Organization, and President Kent was asked to appear in Prague before it was too late.

‘What do you think Fabian?’ The President asked another statesman whom he trusted with his life, Fabian Dickson.

Fabian wasn’t much of a talker; he only made suggestions where necessary.

‘We should ignore their invitation. The highest they could do is drop missiles here and there, but we are strong enough to fight back. Always Have.’ Fabian drawled lazily.

The third man in the Lair of Daniel was indifferent about the whole matter. In fact, James Harper was in a world of his own. His cloudy gray eyes flicked over the pages of the King James Bible that he always carried along with him.

‘What do you say James? This is an important matter…’ The President asked for his answer.

James sighed and shut the Holy Book, ‘I think you know what to do President, you just want validation for it. I agree with Fabian and Druman, ignore the United Nations.’

Though it seemed he was looking straight at President Kent, his eyes were on the huge clock that ticked incessantly.

He had a little son to go back to, and he also had cats to feed. His heart fluttered as he thought about his mistress whom he couldn’t wait to see again.

It was rare to meet a woman like that, one that shared similar beliefs and passion for him.

‘You all know that the United Nations would see this as an insult? This is the tenth invitation we are ignoring? Don’t you think we should stop fighting and try to get closer to other countries?’ The President caressed his cheeks.

Though he had fought well and carved a country for his people, he still wanted them to be like other countries. He wanted Newland to trade, to be accepted and respected.

‘President…’ Druman rose to his feet, ‘We can never be like other countries, for that would be a sin before the Lord. We are believers and must not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.’

‘What transaction had light got with darkness?’ Fabian murmured.

James rolled his eyes and ran a finger through his hair, ‘We would ignore them.’ He chipped in.

President Kent relaxed against the swivel chair that was placed on an elevated platform, directly opposite to the wooden chairs made for his men in council.

‘I think we have taken a decision then, let us join the others in the Rosa Mystique.’ He straightened his black suit and rose to his feet.

The three men followed suit, but one of them stopped as the President called him back.

    ‘James?’ President Kent growled.

‘Yes?’ James Harper raised a brow and swirled around.

‘You seemed a little lost during the meeting, are you alright?’ The President asked.

‘Yes, I was just thinking of our great Country and ways to make it better.’ James returned.

The President shrugged and left the room, James was one of the men he trusted with his life. He knew deep down that James didn't dare to betray him.

James was about to step out of the room when his mobile phone beeped. He quickly dragged it out of his pocket and glared at the screen which read:

Indiana has been arrested; find a way to get her out.

    ****

On nights like this, the Children of the prestigious in Newland, especially children of the men in council, where kept out of the hall where the celebrations went on.

Gracious Kent and Steven Harper were some of those children.

The First child, Gracious, was fifteen years old and she was the only child of President Kent and his wife, Nancy.

She was tall and slender like her mother, but she took after her father’s hair.

Gracious had a lovely blonde hair and blue eyes; she was very innocent and oblivious of the things going on around her in Newland.

Steven Harper was James’ Harper’s only son, and he looked a lot like his father.

‘What are you reading?’ Gracious asked as they had run to her father’s study to avoid the noisemaking of the other children.

‘Nothing.’ Steven quickly squeezed the pamphlet he had been reading into his pocket and maintained a straight face.

He knew reading scientific materials was forbidden in Newland, but his father had given them to him anyway, and truth be told, he enjoyed reading them.

‘You are lying Stevie.’ Gracious pouted angrily and hissed. She liked Steven so much, she even had a crush on him, but she was careful not to let it show.

Steven shrugged and moved to the shelf with a stack of old and dusty books.

‘I would love to read something here…’ he ran his index finger over the rail of books, before settling on something.

Gracious was not comfortable being in the study because her parents had warned her not to go in there, but she had wanted to please Steven, so she let him in.

‘What do you want to do?’ She swallowed.

    ‘Read, of course.’ Steve shrugged.

‘Why?’ She asked wide-eyed. Like other kids in Newland, she had been thought to read only the Bible.

‘Aren’t you curious about the world and the things in it? I read to gain more knowledge; it helps one to be balanced.’ Steven pulled out one of the heavy books and dropped it on the table.

His eyes dilated as he realized the book was a scientific encyclopedia.

‘In the beginning were dinosaurs…’ he read the first line in the book.

‘You’re wrong, in the beginning, was the word,’ Gracious countered.

Steven chuckled and shut the book, ‘Why don’t you want me to read this book?’

‘Because we are only supposed to read the Bible; the book of the Lord shall not depart from our lips day and night.’ She replied confidently.

Steve knew better than to argue with people like her. He knew she was not aware of the truth, and he decided to leave her that way.

‘What if I told you that there is a world outside of Newland? A world where people live in freedom and do things differently…’

Gracious shook her head, ‘There’s no such world. Newland is our first home; heaven would be our last.’

Steven Harper was about to offer a retort when the door to the study flew open, and the First Lady marched in angrily.

‘What are you two doing here?’

‘I…I’ Gracious tried to explain, but it was too late. Her mother launched her, a slap that had her reeling across the room.

‘Beg the Lord for forgiveness. I have done the right thing by not sparing you the rod. Meet me in the Great Hall.’

    ****

‘Get your stupid hands off of me!’ Indiana screamed as the men bundled her towards the large cages where prisoners were being held. She knew it was dangerous for her to step into the Red House, but she had no choice. She was fighting for her life and the life of other people.

‘Shut up bitch! I’ll fuck you in the ass.’ One of the men scowled.

‘Don’t you even dare…’ she gritted her teeth angrily.

Indiana Legolas knew she was the greatest threat to President Kent and his fanatical contraption. She had been one of the greatest scientists in the old world, but he had succeeded in taking her by force, just like he did with the other scientists.

She thought of her child should something happen to her. Who would take care of her daughter?

Certainly not the punk she had married, who was more interested in licking Kent’s ass than be on her side.

‘I will be the last to throw a stone at you, and I’ll fuck you after.’ The other soldier giggled.

Indiana chose to ignore them; she had to save her energy and think of a way to stay alive.

Nancy couldn’t just kill her; if only the other scientists had heard about her arrest, maybe they could contact James. Just maybe, she could stay alive.

‘Did you hear that?’ The taller guy with Asian features turned to the second who was very stout and bald.

‘Like a phone…’ the second murmured.

Indiana quickly shut her eyes, knowing she had forgotten to turn off her phone.

‘Fuck.’ She cursed underneath her breath.

‘The bitch is with her phone!’ The men screamed and began to ransack her pockets immediately.

When they had finally gotten her android, she desperately hoped that James had not been the one to message her. She knew the implications of having an affair with a key player in the country of Newland.

‘Get your fucking hands off my hips!’ Legolas struggled with the Asian whose hands were deliberately scouting her hip bone and in a lustful manner.

It was too late for her, as the man found her mobile phone which buzzed continuously.

With a mischievous grin sprawled across his face, the man took the call.

    Chapter Three

The Secret Laboratory that had been in operation for two years now was hidden in Ian Rosewater’s basement. He was part of the faction led by Indiana who still believed that the scientific way, was the only path to the redemption of humanity.

Like Indiana, he had been kidnapped and forced to live his life in Newland, a place he considered dangerous and unhealthy for any human to inhabit.

Day and night, himself, Indiana and a few scientists, always gathered here to discuss a possible way out of Newland. They knew it was a risky deal, but they were ready to try something out.

His other friend, Edward Wimsey had been the one to tell him about Indiana’s arrest at the Red House. He had a feeling something like this would happen, and he had warned her about it, but Indiana had always been a very strong-willed woman, and in her strong willingness was the passion for saving humanity from the hypocritical rule of Galvado Kent.

The bright light of the fluorescent clashed with his hazel iris as he stared through the microscope. Indiana had been working on something, though she had not told them what exactly it was.

She had always been outspoken about her plan, to save humanity, but she never went into much detail about it.

So, Ian had decided to check things out for himself while he was away.

‘What the…’ He bit his lip as he noticed a rare strand of white blood cell wriggling in the mixture that he was observing. He had never seen anything like this. It was a prototype of the human leukocyte, and it looked far superior.

Ian Rosewater quickly pulled out his jotter and took notes. He knew Indiana would be mad should she know about his sneaking around in the lab, but he had no choice.

He had to know what Indiana was working with, so he would give a detailed report when the time came.

Most times, Indiana had been very open with her research and her findings. She had taught the other scientists, the numerous benefits of the Babcock tree and its different parts. She carried out extensive experiments and advised the other scientists always to take a closer look at plants and weeds as some could turn out useful.

It was her belief, that if they failed to get out of Newland and carry as many people along with them, they could at least try to convince the President to make use of herbal medicine which wasn’t against the Bible.

His hairy hands shook as he scribbled hurriedly, the minute he was done, he heard a knock on the door.

‘Edward.’ He was sure his other friend had come, the one who had told him about Indiana’s arrest.

Swiftly, he rushed to the door and pulled it open.

    ‘Edward.’

Edward Wimsey was a stout black man with obsidian eyes. He carried his head bald most of the time. He had been friends with Indiana Legolas even before their forced nationalization into Newland.

‘She should have listened to you.’ Edward released the breath he had been holding.

He had also gone to the Red House for the celebration but had hidden himself in the shadows. Besides, he was not as popular a scientist as Indiana, so it was an easy thing for him to stay hidden.

‘Yea, I told her not to go to the Red House. Nancy doesn’t like much.’ Ian rolled his eyes.

Edward ran his eyes over the lab and the strange disarrangement of things. He noticed a microscope, placed next to the burette that contained a serum that Indiana was yet to tell anyone about.

Ian noticed the look in Edward’s eyes, ‘It’s not what you think. I was just cleaning the lab.’ He rushed back to the table and carried his jotter, to prevent Edward from looking.

‘Oh?’ Edward shrugged, he had never had a reason to question Ian, but Ian didn’t sound like he was telling the truth.

‘So, what are we going to do now?’ Ian asked.

Edward had been the only one who knew about Indiana’s affair with James Harper, so he had quickly alerted the man about Indiana’s arrest.

‘I don’t know, we wait and watch things play out.’ Edward shrugged.

‘This is really bad, Indiana never listens. It wasn’t necessary for her to go to the Red House knowing she isn’t Kent’s favorite person.’ Ian kissed his teeth.

Edward shrugged, ‘I think they will be distracted for a while over there, I was able to contact the United Nations with a hidden identity. If they can mount pressure on Kent for an appearance in Prague or their visit to Newland, I think Indiana would be released in a short while.’

While his two friends, Ian and Indiana were skilled in Microbiology and Medicine, he was better at hacking computers and creating programmes, but that part of his career was a secret.

Like the rest of the scientists, they were all forced to work in the hospital.

A crooked smile played on Ian’s lips, ‘That’s a good one. Do you think Kent would buy that? The United Nations have called him for many years, why would he go now?’

Edward gritted his teeth, ‘I don’t know, I just feel he would make it this time.’ He was worried about Indiana; he knew the consequence of her action was death by punishment.

He hoped her lover, James, would be able to work something out for her.

‘I hope so too.’ Ian shrugged, and moved away, pretending like he had been arranging some things in the secret laboratory.

James quickly ended the call and shut his phone the minute someone else answered. He paced restlessly at the entrance of the Rosa Mystica, Edward Wimsey had been the one to send him that text message about Indiana’s arrest.

‘Fuck!’ He bit his lower lip and forced his eyes shut, not knowing what to do next.

He couldn’t show too much concern for Indiana or Kent would begin to suspect him, and that was the last thing that he wanted.

He regretted helping to build this false world that endangered lives than saved it. A strong compunction to do the right thing made him have sleepless nights, and this was the reason he was determined to work hand in hand with Indiana to make things right in Newland.

‘Having a bad day Harper?’ Elarion Druman, one
