      Ann Morgan si posò il manico del pennello sulle labbra e ammirò il lavoro che aveva fatto. Certo, la seconda n nella scritta Ann Morgan – Investigatrice Privata era un po’ storta. Nonostante quello, era soddisfatta del risultato  .

      Ann pensò all’onda di tristezza che l’aveva travolta quando aveva rimosso il nome di Trevor Bowman dalla porta dell’ufficio. Avrebbe mantenuto le parole Inchieste Discrete sulla porta come un ricordo del suo ex datore di lavoro e come modo di mantenere gli standard alti.

      Si pulì le mani con uno straccio e poi entrò nel suo ufficio. Da lì, guardò fuori dalla finestra verso un cielo che era carico di neve. Neve che sarebbe arrivata per Natale e che avrebbe dato qualcosa in più alle festività. Inoltre, oggi era il suo primo anniversario di nozze, che avrebbe festeggiato da sola perché suo marito Emrys era ancora dato per disperso in azione. Nove mesi prima, i Tedeschi avevano abbattuto il suo aereo da qualche parte sulla Francia. Emrys era impegnato in una missione segreta, per raccogliere informazioni per l’invasione alleata in Normandia. L’invasione era stata un successo e adesso gli Alleati stavano avanzando, dalla Francia verso la Germania.

      Ann avrebbe passato il suo anniversario di nozze da sola. Anche se poi effettivamente sola non era. Molte donne condividevano la sua situazione, avendo i mariti dispersi o morti. Il Circolo Femminile l’aveva invitata alla festa di Natale e non era ancora sicura di volerci andare.

      Le donne del Circolo avevano messo insieme le proprie razioni per essere sicure che il pranzo di Natale fosse una vera e propria libagione. Sul menù c’era il finto tacchino, fatto con salsicce ricoperte di fette di bacon, con delle pastinache al posto delle cosce. Il finto tacchino sembrava vero e, se si amava il gusto del ripieno, allora era un piacere raro.

      A causa della guerra, i clienti di Ann erano pochi, quindi lei passava il tempo decorando il suo ufficio con fiori di stagione e tocchi di vernice fresca. In cima all’archivio aveva messo un ramo di agrifoglio. Però non aveva messo il vischio, nel caso potenziali clienti maschi lo interpretassero come  un segnale e arrivassero alla conclusione sbagliata.

      Ann era seduta alla sua scrivania e, sospirando, pensò agli eventi più recenti. Perlomeno la guerra stava per finire. Il Governo aveva richiamato formalmente la Guardia Nazionale e nell’ultimo mese l’Ottava Armata Britannica aveva oltrepassato il fiume Lamone in Italia, la Terza Armata Americana aveva preso una fabbrica di missili a Wittering, nella Francia orientale e gli americani avevano trionfato a Metz. Che vita ci sarebbe stata, dopo la guerra? Era troppo presto per contemplare la pace?

      Ann si stava ponendo quella domanda quando il suo telefono cominciò a squillare. Sollevò la cornetta e
