    College dropout, aspiring writer, and smalltime marijuana grower, Thumb Rivera is in a bind. Confined to his rural ranch house in the desolate Maine countryside, he can only watch as his former friends and housemates scheme behind his back, conspire to steal his girlfriend, and make inroads with a dangerous biker gang. It’s really no fun being dead.
     
    Thumb is a stoner ghost forced to haunt his survivors and reflect on the circumstances that led to his unsolved murder. Luckily, he discovers a channel through which he can communicate with the living world: Ben, an amateur ghost hunter who’s convinced Fred Muttkowski, a failed novelist turned pig farmer, to fashion Thumb’s Ouija board conversations into an actual book.
     
    Thumb wants two things: To solve and avenge the mystery of his own death, and to tell his story. That story, as told to Ben, then fictionalized by Fred, is American Ghost, a “clever, quirky, puzzling, disturbing, and truly original” tale of the afterlife, the ephemeral nature of this life, and a paean to lost souls—both living and dead (John Nichols, author of The Milagro Beanfield War).

    Paul Guernsey is an author, editor, and college instructor. His first novel, Unhallowed Ground, was a finalist for the PEN Nelson Algren Fiction Award. When not writing, Guernsey teaches writing and communication at Unity College in Maine and runs the popular website The Ghost Story, home of The Ghost Story Supernatural Fiction Award, a highly regarded international short story competition. American Ghost is his third novel.
