When the combat exclusion law was repealed in 1993, women in the military were allowed to select warfare specialties as their path for the first time in history. A graduate of the Naval Academy in 1994, Joanna Sprtel Walters was one of the first female officers to serve aboard a combatant warship. Her courageous memoir revisits her battle to succeed, not only at the Academy, but throughout her Naval career.
At a time when gender barriers are being broken in all walks of life, Walters’s frank story illuminates her efforts to survive—and thrive—despite sexual assault, an extortion case, blatant gender discrimination, an ill-advised relationship with another officer, and the constant need to find her own voice among a chorus of men. A Surface Warfare Officer for more than six years, Waters served on the USS Paul F. Foster and the USS La Moure County, earning Navy Achievement Medals, Navy Commendation Medals and the rank of lieutenant before retiring. Her memoir will inspire anyone striving to carve out their own place in the world.
