When Osborne Russell was hired to join business magnate Nathaniel Wyeth’s second expedition to the west in 1834, the fur trapper began a journal. Over the next nine years, that diary would encompass comprehensive descriptions of the Rocky Mountain region—its climate, rivers, and lakes, as well as the animals that lived there. Russell also described the customs of the area’s Native community and his daily life as a hunter.
Containing an early description of the Lamar Valley, or Osborne’s Secluded Valley, in Yellowstone National Park, Journal of a Trapper lets readers follow the trail of true mountain man and appreciate the beauty of a newly discovered world.
