About this ebook

A Murray Whelan Mystery from the author of Stiff. “Murray is a great creation . . . Takes the wisecracking wise guy into a whole new realm” (Houston Chronicle).

When Murray Whelan, lovelorn political minder and part-time fitness fanatic, is recruited to massage Australia’s bid for the Olympics he has no idea how tough the going will get.

Not even the sight of the gorgeous Holly Deloite in her taut blue leotard at the City Club can stop him diving headfirst into trouble. And, when the death of the young Aboriginal athlete Darcy Anderson proves that murder is a contact sport, Murray is soon breaking all the rules.

Mixing it with a savvy black activist, a body-building psychopath and the enigmatic Dr Phillipa Knox, Murray jumps the gun every time.

“One of the most outrageously funny voices in modern detective fiction . . . Shane Maloney’s prose is more than a ‘nice try’ at combining social and political satire with the conventions of the crime novel. It’s spot on.” —The Age

“Far and away the most fully realized character in this whimsical novel is Whelan himself, who makes for an irresistible narrator. Maloney renders a vulnerable and very human portrait of this unlikely hero . . . the author adds a fresh and immensely appealing dimension to the genre.” —Publishers Weekly

“Another welcome, witty, off-the-wall, and devil-may-care adventure for Murray.” —Library Journal

“Tight pace, believable dialogue, terrific puzzle: Melbourne may have missed the Olympics, but they have a first-rate amateur sleuth.” —Kirkus Reviews

Maloney is in top form here as his protagonist Murray Whelan, Australian Labor Party apparatchik, is seconded to the 1996 Melbourne Olympic Games bid. As history tells us, Atlanta hosted the 1996 Olympics, so this a story of failed skullduggery and arse-kissing, which I always find more interesting than stories of successful skullduggery and arse-kissing.Whelan is swept up in the machinations behind Melbourne's bid to win the right to be host city for the 1996 Olympics and much of it is hilarious. And, as Whelan notes at the end, coming third in an arse-licking competition is somewhat embarrassing.

A deeply biased four stars. Murray for PM.
