    1. Coaching and healing

1.1. What is coaching? Holistic coaching

1.1.1. Origins of the concept of coaching

The word ‘coach’ brings to mind the classic American football coach from movies – those people who traditionally practised this profession, taking on the role of tutors, trainers and even motivators. Throughout history, the concept of coaching has been mentioned by different authors in various fields of knowledge: from the Socratic method to Nietzsche’s existentialism in philosophy. In psychology, from Freudian psychoanalysis, Carl Rogers’ humanist approach and Albert Ellis’ cognitive behavioural therapy to Fritz Perls’ Gestalt therapy and many more. Some spiritual traditions, such as Buddhism and Sufism, also refer to it. Writers like Daniel Goleman, the creator of ‘emotional intelligence’ in relation to management and leadership, also write about coaching; likewise, other sciences such as biology, quantum physics, linguistics or systems theory make reference to the concept. Now we have explored the origins of coaching, I will move on to define what we understand by coaching.

    1.1.2. Definition of coaching

It can be said that no one definition exists for the concept of coaching; nevertheless, certain points are common to most authors and associations. Below are different definitions of coaching:

...an ongoing professional relationship that helps people produce extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses or organisations. Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their performance, and enhance their quality of life. International Coach Federation

...accompanying a person or a team based on their professional needs for the development of their potential within the framework of professional objectives. Société Française de Coaching (French Coaching Society)

Coaching is the art of asking questions to help other people through learning, in the exploration and discovery of new beliefs that result in the achievement of their objectives. Escuela Europea de Coaching (European School of Coaching)

Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them. John Whitmore

Coaching closes the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. It is a professional relationship with someone who accepts nothing but your best and who will advise you, guide you, and encourage you to go beyond self-imposed limitations in order to realise your full potential. Talane Miedaner

It can be concluded that some definitions are more focused on the method, others on obtaining results or on the client’s own needs, but that all of them evoke that accompaniment and guidance in decisions and in the path of life, seeking to extract and strengthen the best of the person in order to obtain results.

Now we have examined the definition of ‘coaching’, we will concentrate on understanding what ‘holistic coaching’ is.

    1.1.3. Holistic coaching

Coaching helps us to achieve goals and objectives; it is a guide or advisor; the adjective ‘holistic’ involves study of the whole: the human being is a comprehensive being formed by body, mind and spirit.

The view of holistic coaching towards the human experience is therefore global and integral, and the tools or resources on which it relies likewise encompass wisdom and integrative knowledge. Bio-psycho-spiritual understanding is the basis of holistic coaching and thus sees the person in a global way, in his or her physical, mental, emotional and spiritual dimensions. Holistic coaching is supported by a knowledge set that will offer help and resources to accompany the person in their path of life and obtain his or her greatest potential to achieve wellbeing and happiness.

Just as medicine possesses a holistic dimension, it is also possible to use a holistic view in coaching. For example, doctors like Deepak Chopra in Ayurvedic medicine or Dr Carvajal in sintergetics, use the holistic dimension to heal. Holistic coaching differs from other kinds of coaching like executive coaching, whose aim is to develop the potential of an individual in a firm; holistic coaching more closely resembles personal coaching or ‘life coaching’, which is centred on the resolution of personal problems; but holistic coaching uses a global approach and integrative tools, going beyond material goals or achievements to attain happiness and personal wellbeing.

    1.2. The need to heal

Throughout life, we go through different stages and moments and the need to heal arises; we lose a partner, we get separated, a child dies, or parents die, we suffer from anxiety or stress or cancer... Life, as we move forward through it, offers us trials and tribulations to overcome, it is part of
