Jesus and the Lion in the Clouds

My alarm went off at 5:00 am. It was Thursday, October 23, 2014; and I started my day as usual. After a deep yawn and stretch, I put on my robe and made my way to the kitchen to make a pot of my favorite coffee. As I could smell the aroma my coffee was brewing, I put on my robe and took my dog, Chico, for his morning walk. Once Chico finished his business, we went back inside. I went into the kitchen to feed my four-legged companion, and put water in his bowl. I slowly eased into my favorite chair, sipped on a cup of coffee and chicory and enjoyed the silence of the morning. When I looked at wall clock and saw it was already 5:30. It was time to wake up my youngest daughter, Rebecca.

I gently shook my daughter and told her it was time to wake up for school. I think she needed a few more minutes of sleep, but I didn’t let her. This was our morning ritual. As Rebecca got dressed, I was in the other bathroom brushing my teeth and washing my face. I don’t know what it was, but there was something special and magical in the air. After brushing my hair with a few quick strokes of the brush, and applying my make-up, I put on my black and grey sweater, my almost-favorite boots and a pair of jeans. By this time, Rebecca had finished getting dressed, ate breakfast and was ready to go. We hopped in the car and I drove a few blocks to the bus stop. Rebecca jumped out of the car, and I watched her fall in line behind some of her classmates to board the big, yellow-school bus to start her day.

I don’t know what it was but the day felt right, like nothing could go wrong. The sky was a beautiful ocean blue with minimal clouds as far as the eye could see. It was a little chillier than normal for Louisiana weather and I was glad I listened to my inner voice and dressed accordingly. On my way home from dropping off Rebecca, my oldest daughter, Tiffany, called me and asked if I could stop by and pick up Rebecca’s clothes she had forgotten over there the previous weekend. I was happily obliged to do so but I informed my eldest daughter I had a few errands to run that would take a few hours. If she was ok with it, I would be there at 4 pm.

After running around for a few hours, I finally completed my last errand of the day. I deposited my child support check at the local back in Covington. Since I hadn’t eaten all day, I was feeling a little weak, so I stopped at a fast food drive thru and ordered a hamburger combo in order to reduce the hunger pains and stomach growls. After my stomach was full and I regained my energy, I went to the mall to do a little shopping. What woman doesn’t like to shop on a beautiful day, right?

After spoiling myself in the mall, I called Tiffany and told her I was on my way to her house. She lives in small town called, Arabi, right outside of New Orleans. I live in Franklinton, Louisiana. The drive is over an hour and a half. I hopped in my car, turned on my gospel music and headed to my oldest daughter’s house, paid my $3 toll and drove on the Causeway Bridge. I know some people who have a fear of driving on it and I don’t blame them. The Causeway is the longest bridge over water in the world. It’s about 24 miles long and takes about 30 minutes to cross Lake Pontchartrain.

As the day progressed, it seemed to have gotten more beautiful or maybe it was how sunny and bright it was. It honestly felt like the light of heaven was shining on me. I never saw anything like that since I’ve been blessed to breathe on this planet. You could see the sunrays shimming and reflecting off of the lake, while simultaneously seeing the reflection of the clouds in the water. Bright and beautiful would be a bad choice of words, it was majestic and left me flabbergasted.

It was 4pm and I was driving at a steady 55 miles per hour on the Causeway. I will never forget that autumn day. I noticed in my passenger and rear-view mirror how the clouds were beginning to form shapes. I’ve always seen clouds form shapes before, but this was different. Curiosity caused me to peer to my left, then right. My fingers decided to press the button to roll down my driver’s side window. As the window slowly lowered, I enjoyed the crisp, coolness of the air blowing in the car, intertwining with the warmth of the sun on my skin. It felt great! My insides marveled at the experience, as I lost myself in the wonderment of the Creator’s work.

I wanted to preserve this moment in time, so I turned down the radio and picked up my phone to use the camera. I looked over Lake Pontchartrain with amazement. The big, white clouds, seemed to have formed around the sun like feathers on a bird. The light was beaming so bright over the still waters that I couldn’t look for long. Plus, I still had to pay attention to the road. I snapped a few pictures and continued driving while in a trance. Before I knew it, I was exiting off of the world’s longest bridge. I was glad I took those pictures because the clouds began to vanish and soon disappeared from over Lake Pontchartrain. The entire time driving on Interstate 10 through Metairie, New Orleans, and finally Arabi, I couldn’t stop thinking about what I witnessed and was a part of. I wondered if other people were lucky enough to see what I saw; or questioned the notion that it was only meant for me to see. Either way, I couldn’t wait to tell Tiffany about my experience on the Causeway.

I was at Tiffany’s house for a few hours, and I immensely enjoyed the visit. We talked for quite a while. I told her about my experience driving over the lake but I didn’t show her the pictures, I guess I forgot. She did agree it was a beautiful autumn day. When I realized it was 6:00 pm, I loaded up Rebecca’s clothes into the car and closed the door. I walked over to my oldest daughter, hugged her tightly, kissed her cheek and told her, I love you.

I got into my car and headed home, and made the hour and a half drive home through
