CHAPTER ONE
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
In the Old Testament era, God made a promise to pour His Spirit upon all flesh that all may receive and manifest the Spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit. Though we are made in the image and likeness of God, the presence and gifts of the Holy Spirit in our lives is still inevitable, little wonder, even when Jesus has spent about three years with His Disciple, in spite of their three years of apprenticeship with the Master, they still were not able to do all that Jesus did. They have been well trained yet, they lacked the most important which was to be the completion of their apprenticeship; to experience the fulfillment of the promise God made through Prophet Joel (2:28); that in no distant time, all will receive an outpouring of the Holy Spirit and manifest the Spiritual Gifts.
The importance of Spiritual Gifts in our time cannot be overemphasized. You will remember that when Jesus and His apostles; Peter, James, and John came down from the ‘mountain of Transfiguration,’ a crowd was waiting for Him at the foot of the mountain because His Disciples were not able to deliver a boy suffering under a satanic yoke. I presume that they must have tried everything they ever learned without success. After their travail, and asking, why they were not able to heal (Exorcise) the boy, Jesus tells them that such calls for ‘fasting and prayer’ (cf. Mk 9:14-29) thereby, implying the manifestation and exercise of the gift of Word of Knowledge.
God, being ‘an all-knowing and ever loving Father, fully aware that we need the release of Spiritual Gifts in our time, fulfilled the long-awaited promise on the Pentecost Day. Therefore, we need to note that the Spiritual Gifts are at our disposal to make human life on earth worthwhile.
DEFINITION
It is expedient to define the term Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit, according to Gelasius of Cyzicus is of the same Godhead and essence as the Father and the Son, and is ever inseparable from the Father and the Son, as the Son is from the Father, and the Father from the Son.
(from the history of the Council of Nicea, A.D. 476). Epiphanius. In The Man Well-Anchore (A.D. 374), holds that the Holy Spirit is ever with the Father and the Son, and is from God, proceeding from the Father and receiving of the Son (7). Epiphanius further notes that the Holy Spirit is neither begotten nor created but of the same substance with the Father and the Son
(Panarion, 74. A.D. 377).
According to the Athanasian Creed, the Holy Spirit is from the Father and the Son, not made nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding. (A.D. 400). Augustine says that
the Holy Spirit, according to the Holy Scriptures, is neither of the Father alone, nor of the Son alone, but of both." The Trinity, XV: 17, 27 (A.D. 408). The Holy Spirit is the third (3rd) person of the Blessed Trinity.
KNOWING THE HOLY SPIRIT
The term Spirit
translates the Hebrew word ‘ruah,’ which, in its primary sense, means breath, wind, and air. In John's Gospel, Jesus uses the sensory image of the wind to suggest to Nicodemus. The transcendent newness of him who is personally God's breath, the divine Spirit. On the other hand, Spirit
and Holy
are divine attributes common to the three divine persons. By joining the two terms, Scripture, liturgy, and theological language designate the inexpressible person of the Holy Spirit, without any possible equivocation with other uses of the terms spirit
and holy.
The Holy Spirit is ‘the principle of every vital and truly saving action in each part of the Body.’ He works in many ways to build up the Body in charity: …by the many special graces (called ‘charisms’), by which he makes the faithful ‘fit and ready to undertake various tasks and offices for the renewal and building up of the Church" (CCC 798).
ORIGIN
The eternal origin of the Holy Spirit is revealed in his mission in time. The Spirit is sent to the apostles and to the Church both by the Father in the name of the son, and by the son in person, once he had returned to the Father. The fullness of the mystery of the Holy Trinity is manifest in the sending of the person of the Spirit after
