About this ebook

Emily was in between jobs and just trying to get back on her feet. Leaving a job interview with the New England Calvary, she had been full of hope of joining their first-rate medical team as a physical therapist. For the first time in a long time, she had been optimistic about the future. That's when star quarterback Adonis Goodman crashed into her life. With his fancy sports car and charismatic smile, Emily was not prepared for the upheaval he caused.

Two seconds, that's all it took. Not even the length of time to throw a winning touchdown, or block an opponent, and Adonis' life crashed, literally, into Emily. Pulling a beautiful woman from a burning car is not how he saw his day going. But, here is, trying to get her out before they both bite it.

When he is attracted to her but she can't stand the site of him, Adonis kicks it up a notch and unleashes his dazzling charm. Will that be enough to penetrate Emily's tough shell and even tougher heart?

** Standalone short story, no cliffhangers.

    Off The Field

    Chapter 1

    Emily

E m, can I speak with you for a moment? I looked up from the paperwork I was filling out on a patient chart. Charles, my boss, waved me into his office. I stood up from my desk and walked across the patient gym to his office.

What’s up? I asked, as I leaned against the door jamb and looked at him expectantly. He waved me inside and I stepped forward a bit cautiously, Charles never asked anyone into his office unless he had something serious to say. I was pretty sure I hadn’t done anything wrong. I got along well with all of my patients and they always showed improvements with my therapy.

Go ahead and close the door, I have some news... he said with a sigh and I closed the door and sat down across form his desk. So...you may not know this, but the practice is downsizing. For several reasons. One of the biggest being we don’t have enough money to keep up with the amount of physical therapists on staff... my heart fell in my chest, all I could do was exhale deeply and sit back in the chair.

You’re letting me go? I asked and Charles nodded slowly.

"We only hire the best here, and it sucks to have to let any of you go, but...we just can’t keep up with the staff. We’ll have to bill the patients too much and that will result in losing patients...which we can’t have," he said and I nodded.

I understand. I really didn’t know what to say. Numbness was settling in to buffer the blow of being let go. I really didn’t see it coming. Am I the first? I asked him abruptly and he paused as he was about to say something else.

Ah, yes, you are. By the end of today I’m going to have to let everyone go from the morning rotation... he said and I sighed. I would have to start looking for another job, I would have to start really budgeting until I got one, and I would have to find one fast so I wouldn’t fall behind on any bills ...now? Now what?

I’m really sorry to have to do this to you Emily, but the guys up top have their books you know? Charles said and I nodded.

No, yeah, I get it...ah...I’ll just fire up my resume and stuff. I’ll be fine, I said and wondered if that was really true.

Of course you will, you know where to come for recommendations. We still love you here, Charles said and I snorted.

Sure, I just can’t work for you guys anymore, I said, the comment slipped out, but thankfully Charles let it roll off his shoulders.

Seriously, anywhere you send a resume out to, let me know and I’ll put in a call for you, he said. I nodded and tried to smile.

Okay...thank you. Um, I guess I’ll get going? It’s the end of my shift anyway, I said and Charles nodded. He stood up and rounded his desk to give me the world’s most awkward hug.

Keep in touch, he said and I nodded and gave him a half smile before I left his office. I went over to my desk and started packing things up as if on autopilot. I had never been let go before. I had never been fired. I had never even been transferred elsewhere. Anything remotely relating to my career has always been successful. I really didn’t know how to handle such disappointment. I had to make a couple of trips to my
