About this ebook

In a culture where travel and moving has become a common practice, finding a place to rest and call home is so valuable. However, Home doesn't only mean a physical location. Home is a place where your heart finds peace. It is a place where we find security and acceptance and a place where love overflows to fill all the spaces and make us complete.
The season of Advent is a time of waiting and preparing. Like God's people in Jesus's time, we are waiting and preparing for the light of Christ to be revealed on earth. They too were wandering and drifting, but God sent a foundation on which to build His church. He sent us his son, Jesus, to draw us close and gather us into a place of constant protection, endless love, and unlimited grace. This is the promise that awaits us during Advent.
During this busy season, this daily devotional will guide you through scripture to help you experience God's promises and will light your path home.

    Finding Home - Julia White

    Introduction

‘H ome’ is the word people use when they talk about where they grew up or the place where they live permanently now. It’s a word that means their physical surroundings, but it also encompasses all of the cultures and traditions that happen in that place. Years ago, it wasn’t uncommon to know someone that had never left their home state...or sometimes, never left their hometown. Modern innovations in transportation and technology have now changed all that. Not only can people travel all over the world, but they can globally connect with others too, all from the convenience of their living room. In some ways, it’s a blessing to no longer be as dependent on those in our immediate vicinity for what we need, but sometimes we can get lost in the fluctuating changes that go along with a wider realm of existence. We may feel more like nomads than permanent residents.

However, the concept of ‘home’ includes the groups of people that share our hearts and our journeys, too. It’s not just the house where we live, it’s our families and our close friends that make up the space we call home. Home becomes a state of mind and a place of love where we exist with others, no matter what the physical environment or genetic relationship. Being at home with those we call family gives us love, peace, and understanding. It is the space in which we grow.

Today, with the rush and roar of our busy world flying by us, it seems more important than ever to have a strong recognition of where our home lies. We need a sense of belonging and a secure spot to rest our hearts and recharge. We have an instinct inside all of us to return to a place where we feel safe and loved. We need to return to a familiar destination and find our spot within a group of people where we do not feel pulled to be anywhere else. We need a place to RESIDE...a place where we can be present and embraced.

Just like a builder constructs supports for a house and transforms wooden beams into a masterpiece, God also helps us build and transform our lives in a way that supports our relationship with Him. No longer are we meant to wander in the desert; God sent Jesus Christ to be our salvation and sacrifice on the cross. The cross itself is our foundation for truth and grace and by using it as our guide we are reminded that God draws us close to Him in order to create a masterpiece in His image...a masterpiece within us and within the world around us.

As we look at the cross, we can see the junction where the horizontal and vertical bars meet. This center is the place where the beams reside together in harmony; it is an intersection between two linear forces that are made strongest when they cross paths in the middle. The vertical arm of the cross stretches upward and simultaneously reaches downward to be secured in a solid foundation, while the horizontal arm is balanced and supported as it reaches out to each side. The vertical arm is our connection with God and His infinite presence along our journeys. We are secure in God’s foundation of truth, grace, promises and unconditional love. In our times of joy, struggles, or waiting, He reaches down to us as we reach up to Him and welcomes us home in His arms.

The horizontal arm of the cross is our world, our communities, and how we apply God’s words to our lives. In one way, we extend out from the center into our neighborhoods and into our stories with others. In the opposite way, we bring our experiences with the world back to the cross for self-reflection and reminders of God’s truth in our lives. The center of the cross is where we find our home in God through Jesus Christ His son. We are the strongest when our lives intersect with Him and we continue to grow with the support of His solid foundation.
