    Alien Queen

    CHAPTER 1

Isat cross-legged at the back of the 3 rd grade classroom, my hands clasped together on top of my blue notebook. Perhaps on the surface, I looked calm and composed as expected of a lower school coordinator. With my long brown tresses wrapped in a low bun, my makeup done perfectly, and my full, pink-tinted lips set in a straight line, nobody would ever suspect that I was the least bit bothered by the discussion of The Flare that happened back in 2020.

As your parents have probably told you, there was a huge explosion ten years ago that changed the world and changed our lives... Mr. Milton was saying to the class. He tapped a button on the smart board and a hologram of the former New York City appeared, taking up almost the entire space in the front area of the room.

Whoa! some students said in evident amazement.

One boy who looked bored loudly declared, It's not so impressive. It's nowhere like The Hub.

Mr. Milton turned to him and smiled. That's right, Billy. It's really far from The Hub, the center of all platforms of our new society. But did you know that this city called New York is actually where The Hub stands today?

Billy's eyes widened in surprise. Cool, he breathed, looking astonished by this little bit of information.

Mr. Milton then seemed to enter the hologram as he walked toward where the Statue of the Liberty was. He touched it with a finger and the image grew bigger. Suddenly, a virtual storm came over the city. It raged on and on. Watch closely, the history teacher said. The students leaned in closer and watched in anticipation.

My heart thumped crazily. Even after ten years, I still have nightmares about The Flare. I gripped my notebook tightly and tried not to look affected when the torch on the Statue of Liberty lit up with a bigger flare that seemed to grow larger and larger by the second despite the rampant storm. Suddenly, without any warning, it exploded, creating an enormous black cloud in the sky and causing the entire monument to shatter into pieces.

I looked down. My hands were trembling. There was no sound accompanying the hologram images, but in my mind, I could still hear the deafening thunder ringing endlessly in my ears that day. I could still see the entire Central Park becoming enveloped in intense brightness as people scrambled and scurried, shouting, shrieking and cursing.

At that moment, I shut my eyes automatically because of the blinding light. My husband Kevin, who was holding my hand a minute earlier as we were strolling across the park, had suddenly slumped to the ground. I opened my eyes, but I couldn't see anything. I just felt his hand let go. As I screamed and dropped down next to him, strong hands wrapped around my waist and took me away. I felt myself being hoisted up on muscular shoulders. I couldn't see anything at all. But I kept on thrashing and twisting to get away and to get back to Kevin-—to no avail. The man who was carrying me was as hard as solid rock and didn't seem at all fazed by any of my movements.

The Flare still kept growing and expanding, Mr. Milton was saying. It reached the point where it seemed to have overtaken the entire sky! The immense glare and heat covered the earth and people everywhere were not just blinded but were also scalded to death. It was terrible.

Breathe, Jessie, I told myself silently as I tried to focus on the present and erase the awful memories.

Dad said it was an alien attack! a short blonde boy cried, his face a mixture of fear and delight.

Yes, it was. Evil aliens from different planets have been planning it for a long time without our knowledge, Mr. Milton answered. They are called the Xandrax Clan, out to destroy planets that won't bow down to their power and authority. They didn't get in touch with humans, though. They felt that we won't be of any use to them because we're not as advanced in technology and we're not built with supernatural abilities.

What are their supernatural powers? a green-eyed girl at the back asked.

My heart had already slowed down by this time. I was trying to concentrate on the discussion going on, reminding myself that I was here as a coordinator to observe and evaluate the history class and the teacher.

Many aliens are already built with amazing strength and speed, but the ones from the Xandrax Clan have also been injecting themselves with chemicals from Planet Phi that were said to make them even more monstrous in appearance while also lengthening their lifespan.

Wow, the girl said, seeming in awe. Where are they now?

We can't tell for sure, Mr. Milton said. But those who survived The Fight will surely attempt to come back here someday and get revenge.

    Why? another kid asked.

Because they didn't complete their mission. They had not finished all humans... The history teacher went on
