The Greatest of These - Christian Amish Romance - Hannah Miller

    The Greatest of These

    Chapter 1

Rachel was married to Matthew on a sunny Tuesday in late October. Everyone that Ruth knew was there. The entire Church attended, and now were all finishing the preparations for the dinner.

The bride and groom at events such as these often enjoyed pairing up their friends who were single, hoping to create more happy marriages. Ruth was unmarried, and so was her friend Martha. They stood at the wall together. Ruth glanced over to Benjamin, the youngest brother of the bride, Rachel. She was speaking to him about seating arrangements for the wedding.

Ruth and Benjamin were the same age, and had gone to school together, but had not seen each other much since finishing their studies. Ruth noticed that Benjamin had grown considerably since their school days. They had been the same height in grade eight, but now was easily a foot taller than she was. His body had filled out too, from working on the farm with his father.

Come now, it will make me happy! And you don’t want to make me upset on my wedding day, do you? said Rachel to her younger brother Benjamin.

Where will you have me sit? asked Benjamin to Rachel.

Rachel smiled mischievously at him, and pointed to a small table in the far corner of the room.

Over there. And then I’ll find a sweet young lady to sit with you.

Benjamin walked heavy-footed over to a chair, pulled it out, and sat down. He didn’t look particularly miserable, but he certainly was not overjoyed.

Rachel glanced around at all the bachelors and spinsters in the room. Her eyes hovered for a moment on Martha, who became self-conscious, causing her face to lose all color. She shook it to bring back the color. Rachel then turned her eyes to Ruth, and her eyes lit up.

Ruth! You can join my brother Benjamin in the back there.

Ruth felt herself blush, and heard snickers from her peers as continued to stand next to the wall. She had never dreamed that she would get picked! She wasn’t sure that she was ready to think about men yet. She hadn’t ever thought about it.

Martha elbowed her, and when Ruth looked at her, she nodded her head in Benjamin’s direction.

Ruth shook her head in reply.

Come on, Ruth! Don’t be shy! Rachel said, and took a few steps towards her.

Ruth looked over at the table where Benjamin sat. An oil lantern flickered lazily on the table, making his hair look like a field of wheat at sunset. And his eyes were gentle, a soft, warm brown.

And when he looked up at her and made eye contact, he smiled a knowing smile, as if to say, I apologize for my sister.

Ruth smiled back, but quickly ducked
