Casualty of Love - Medical Doctor Romance - Kelly Cusson

    Casualty of Love

    Chapter 1

I s there a partay in the house? howled Rainbo Flynn, as she launched herself onto the nurses’ desk. On a nearby stereo, music blasted into the long-term care ward of Appleberry Hospital. Patients leapt from their beds, and danced to the beat of the song. Rolls of tissue paper were used as substitutes for party streamers, and intravenous drip bags were the closest things to balloons.

Shimmying along the nurses’ desk, Rainbo performed a choreographic routine that would rival any modern popstar’s. She may not have been lithe but she was comfortable in her own body, meaning no dance-move was too ambitious to attempt! Her bright-blonde hair, drawn into a pony-tail, whipped the air, and with every excited flick of her head, she sent the patients into fits of hysterics.

The recipient of the party, 80-year-old Mildred Witherby wore a bright-pink birthday sash with the words Birthday Girl and bopped along in her wheeled walking-frame.

At the end of the ward, fellow nurse, Mercedes Ventura found herself smiling on at her best-friend’s performance. She had never seen patients having such a good time on a hospital ward.

Mercedes and Rainbo had been inseparable since the first time they’d worked together. In terms of physical appearances, Mercedes was the complete opposite of Rainbo. Where Mercedes had long, flowing dark-brown hair that shimmered in the light, Rainbo had light-blonde hair that was a little frizzled in places. Where Rainbo was short, fuller-figured and ‘cute’, as opposed to sexy, Mercedes was tall, super-slim and stereotypically attractive. But as Mercedes watched on, she loved how Rainbo had the ability to charm and captivate the entire ward.

On another side of the hospital, Amanda Crealey ran frantically along a corridor, looking for the office of the charge nurse. Amanda was the youngest nurse in the hospital, and had gained a reputation amongst staff for being a ‘drama-queen’. With her natural red hair threatening to fly loose of its pony-tail at any given moment, several passers-by stopped to make way as she sped past. Finding the door to the office of Bea Landau, Amanda burst clumsily inside.

Sister Landau! It’s Rainbo. You need to come quick!

Unusually for an authoritarian figure, Bea obeyed on this occasion. She followed Amanda straight to the long-term care ward, and took several tentative steps onto the open-plan floor. Staring out at the noisy scene before her, Bea found her mouth falling agape. For a moment, she feared she’d lost all ability to speak. When she eventually managed to gain control, she barked, Rainbo Flynn. In my office now!

    Chapter 2

ARE OUT OF YOUR MIND? Bea Landau demanded to know.

Her voice hung inside the small back room that served as the office of the charge nurse. Rainbo sat on the other side of Bea’s oak-desk, feeling like a pupil who had been summoned to see the head-mistress.

In her early sixties, Bea was an imposing figure. She may not have been tall, but her presence and naturally-arched eyebrows more than compensated. She kept her shoulder-length auburn hair in pristine condition.

It was just meant to be a little bit of fun... Rainbo started. I’d checked with all the patients beforehand.

Need I remind you that the only reason you’ve survived here so long is because Dr. Greenwich saw something in you... Bea stated firmly. One only wonders if the poor man was losing his marbles as he approached retirement.

Dr. John Greenwich had been the chief physician at Appleberry hospital for as long as Rainbo had worked there. Practically everyone at the hospital had been sad to see him retire–not least Rainbo, whom he’d always been fond of.

Sometimes, a good old-fashioned belly laugh is the best medicine going! he’d always said in defence of Rainbo’s unconventional ways.

    "Tomorrow, our new chief physician,
