    MELVIN FOUND THE FIRST LITTLE dogie who’d gone missing—the largest runt of his cattle herd—in an old grand fir, about twenty feet up above his head.

    He figured she got there by trying to jump over the moon (again) and missing something fierce. She either got stuck in the tree on her way up, or landed in it on her way down.

    She didn’t seem particularly disturbed by her current predicament. She stood with her hind legs on one branch, a little lower than the branch she rested her front hooves on. Delicate green shoots were just within reach of her mouth, and she chewed contentedly. Her mostly brown coat went well with the gray of the trunk, though her white face and belly stood out starkly against the green pine needles.

    Melvin slid his black cowboy hat back further on his head as he looked up at the tree. The morning had dawned clear and cool, though it was likely to get hot by the afternoon, as the summer waned on. He just had on a blue denim work shirt and jeans, though he was thinking that it might be coming on time to break out one of his wool vests.
