    INTRODUCTION

In recent years the growth of pub quiz or pub trivia nights in South Africa has been nothing short of phenomenal. Especially in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Pretoria and Durban, quiz nights are now a regular weekly or fortnightly social event for many people. All around these and other cities, as well as in several smaller towns, quiz teams of between two and eight people gather to brainstorm, compete and enjoy an evening of good old-fashioned fun, banter and competition. For many it is the social highlight of their week, a chance to see friends, have a good meal, perhaps a few drinks and, above all, be thoroughly entertained. And, of course, it offers a chance to show off how much you know or, perhaps, to realise how much you don’t!

In March 2008 Quizwizz Productions hosted its first pub quiz night at the legendary Colony Arms pub in Craighall, Johannesburg. Since then our quiz nights have expanded and we now run many unique and dynamic fun quiz nights all over the city at a range of venues. We have also run special quiz nights for Sunday Times readers in recent years. We have been truly amazed by the array of people from different backgrounds and ages who now are regular Quizwizzers.

Our quizzes are fun, dynamic and varied. We also always try to customise our quizzes for the participants involved. The Quizwizz brand features a dazzling array of different quiz rounds. This book showcases just some of these: Speed Quiz, Who or Where Am I?, Wipeout, Table Quizzes, as well as many sets of General Knowledge and Trivia rounds.

At our regular quiz nights we also feature Colour Picture Quizzes, Music and Mystery Voice Rounds and Jackpot Questions.

Teams calling themselves The Comatose Camels, Slightly-Stoned Snails, Triumphant Tortoises and The Masai Warriors compete against one another in the quest to be Quizwizz champions and claim prizes which could include cash, meal vouchers, wine, chocolates or other sponsored items.

Quizwizz quiz nights are renowned for being contested in an environment free of cell phones (quizzers can use their phones only when marking another team’s answers).

Part of the reason for the growth of quiz nights in South Africa is the fact that they are fun and bring together people of vastly different backgrounds, interests and ages. Indeed, at many of our quizzes, lawyers (even some judges and advocates), students, journalists, school learners, accountants, grannies and grandpas, mechanics and social workers do battle against one another in an evening lasting approximately two hours at which everyone, or almost everyone, remains totally engaged.

In addition to regular pub quiz nights (which normally take place at a particular venue on a fortnightly basis), Quizwizz compiles and hosts numerous quizzes for corporate events and team building. Our website lists over a hundred corporate clients that we have run quizzes for over the last seven years. Quizwizz also runs an annual schools quiz competition, a programme that is set to expand significantly in 2016. We are planning a big quiz event in which teachers from different schools will compete for some super prizes.

Our quizzes are versatile, and more frequently we are running fun quiz nights for birthday parties (for all ages), bachelorette parties, house parties, fundraisers for charities and schools, and so on (see our website for more details at www.quizwizz.co.za).

So please do come along to one of our quiz nights or book us for your special event or team building. We would be delighted to put together and host a fantastic quiz for you.

    GENERAL KNOWLEDGE

This book includes 60 sets or rounds of General Knowledge and Trivia questions, interspersed between other types of quizzes.

Each General Knowledge set contains 15 questions. Quizwizz quiz nights usually include at least two rounds of 15 questions. We generally avoid category-specific rounds as we believe that not knowing the topic of the next question keeps everyone engaged. The next question may be the one that you will be able to answer. In these rounds we include some easy and some much tougher questions. In this way we seek to balance the fun element with the more serious competitive aspect of a quiz night.

To shift things up, you could use a 15-question set as a Jeopardy Quiz round, in which a correct answer scores plus 1 point and an incorrect answer scores minus 1 point.
