    Undercover Roommate - Tamar Bryce

    One

The breeze blew in through the open window of Cadence’s bedroom just as the sun broke its morning horizon. Birds were chirping right outside her apartment window, singing a melody she didn’t know. Tossing and turning, she glanced over to her alarm clock to see it was just after six. Laying in her warm and cozy bed, she contemplated whether or not to wait for the alarm to sound or just to hop out and attack her day. Unfortunately for her, neither would be the reason for her getting out of bed.

The loud thud against her front door forced her out of bed with a jolt. She slid into her slippers and tossed on her fuzzy robe that hung over the chair in the corner of her bedroom. She whipped down the hallway, zipping past the sparse selection of family photos hanging on the wall. The empty bedroom was filling up with all of her miscellaneous med school books as she slammed that door shut on her way to the front of the apartment.

Cadence closed her robe even tighter as she stumbled sleepily through the living room and finally yanked the front door open. The rather large and bulbous man standing there was no stranger to her. Mr. Randall had a horseshoe haircut with an attitude suited for cow dung so that it stunk.

What’s the problem, Mr. Randall? Cadence grumbled as she stepped into the hallway. She refused to let him in the house while she was there alone. All of their conversations were had in the most public areas of the building, no matter how embarrassing they were. He pointed to the big white sticker, with BOLD red letters, plastered to the door.

Are you serious?! Cadence cried out staring at the eviction notice.

You know the deal! Every month, by the tenth! You need to have the rent EVERY month, by… the… tenth! No exceptions. I’ve been more than lenient with you, and now you’re three months behind Miss Allen! You have one week to get that money to me, or next time I come with the marshalls! he spat. He didn’t wait for her to try and negotiate. Cadence didn’t try to. She watched the portly man wobble down the narrow hallway to harass another student in the building. He had the eviction notice stickers on a pad as he went to another door. Cadence shook her head and retreated into her apartment.

I’m almost done! she screamed out to no one. Her fuzzy slippers dragged as she slumped her way back to her bedroom, faceplanting onto her bed. Why can’t someone else just pay these bills?! Where is my fairy godmother? Cadence grumbled and screamed into her blanket for an intense moment to relieve her stress.

After her tantrum was done, she picked herself up and headed into the bathroom. Cadence had been living in her apartment for the entire time she’d been in medical school. It was nearing the end of her junior year and while the workload wasn’t out of her reach, managing her finances were. She’d gotten herself a scholarship, with no help from her deadbeat parents, which covered the majority of her expenses. But, a few months ago, she needed some expensive equipment for her rotations, so she made a decision to forego her rent in an effort not to flunk her classes. This morning certainly proved why that wasn’t the best choice.

Cadence hated the idea of having a roommate, especially with her quirky study habits and odd waking up hours, but it was the only feasible reason that could solve her eviction issue. She knew that the summer school students were going to be looking for housing, so it made sense that she put up one of them for the summer to catch up on her rent. They’d have to give her first month and security which would help out significantly. She’d made up her mind to host an open house and get herself a roomie.

After washing up and getting dressed, Cadence drew up a quick sign on her laptop and sent it to her email. The computer lab was located in a prime location to catch students in search for just about anything. Once she had a healthy stack of flyers, she went around handing a few out to people walking by that she could manage to make eye contact with. The rest, however, began to litter the sidewalk. With a heavy sigh, Cadence traced her steps back the way she came to pick up all the papers people tossed aside.
