Only when she meets Saoven and Karile, two spies for the Brevians, does it become clear her past holds secrets far more dangerous than she imagined. With invasion imminent and mere days to choose, the time comes to take a side. Faced with two versions of the truth, she must either betray the family she has come to love or a homeland she can't remember.

Janir and her people are now the world's last hope against Malkalar's sorcery. The battle for Staspin was won, but at great cost. Over the mountains, a remnant of elves has barely survived the plague sent by their former prince. Brevia is scattered and divided in the wake of losing their king.  Even with the aid of the Argetallams, the allies fail to turn back Malkalar's witchcraft. Growing desperate, they are left to seek an ancient power none of them can control, none can withstand, and none can predict. Only one thing is for sure—ending Malkalar's life will cost Janir her own.

An assassination ends negotiations in Brevia before they've begun. Janir and Saoven hurry back to Adasha to find their city under siege by Prince Malkalar's elven armies and their former allies. With their defenses weakening and no hope of reinforcements, their only hope is a rumored power in Janir's bloodline. Only she can awaken it, but if she fails, it will mean the extinction of the Argetallams and a genocide like the world has never seen.

A year of living as Crown Princess of the Argetallams has taught Janir to watch her words closely and her actions closer. When Saoven and Karile arrive as ambassadors from Brevia, they bring an offer of peace in exchange for putting down a rising threat. Janir urges the royal court to answer their pleas for help and falls under fresh suspicion from her fellow Invulnerables.  Loyalties are again torn as her father, the Lord Argetallam, and the other Argetallam nobles are eager to leave Brevia to its fate. But something is lurking on the fringes of Staspin, preparing to strike. And the threat may already be on their door step.
