Hopeful Heart - Christian Romance - Johanna Jenkins

    Hopeful Heart

    Chapter 1

Martin Mason anxiously paced around his solid mahogany desk in the plush executive office of the New York Inn. He nodded at the smart looking woman entering the room as he juggled between the phone in one hand and a large file in the other.

Sit down, Amanda, he stated as he hung up on the call. Something urgent has come up at our resort in Stowe, Vermont. The personal assistant to the manager over there has asked for four weeks leave to visit her sick mother in Iowa, so we need a replacement starting next Monday. How do you feel about being transferred for a month to work for Robert Thomas? He is a pleasant enough man to work for I believe... not an old grump like me. He laughed.

Stowe, Vermont, Amanda repeated. Isn’t that a popular spot for skiing and snowboarding?

Certainly is, my dear, and this is one of the best times of year to visit. If you are interested, I will arrange your flights and accommodation straight away. The Green Mountain Resort is quite comfortable and features one of the best restaurants in town. I’m sure you will enjoy it over there.

Sounds exactly like what I need right now. Amanda smiled, twirling a lock of her long, blonde hair as she thought about the prospect of some skiing and a change of scenery. How soon can I leave?

Martin checked his calendar, noting that it was already late Thursday afternoon. I’ll organize a flight for tomorrow. That should give you plenty of time to relax and settle in before you start work Monday.

Great, said Amanda, trying to control the excitement churning up inside her. Looks like I need to go home and pack. Stowe, Vermont, here I come!

Arriving home at her small but compact New York apartment, Amanda reflected on her life thus far. At forty, she was single by choice. Somehow, the right man had never materialized in her life; and besides, she found a lot of satisfaction from doing volunteer work helping to feed the homeless. The church she regularly attended was running a project to help people in need, and working alongside Pastor Rod Barrymore gave her a great degree of fulfillment.

Her only regret was that she didn’t have any children of her own, something she had longed for when she was younger. As the years flew by she put the idea of having a family of her own on the back burner. Instead, she enjoyed playing aunty to many of her friend’s children, who she spoiled with lavish displays of affection and presents.

Entering her bedroom to pack, Amanda noticed her reflection in the gilt edged mirror. She was blessed to have a good complexion, fair and milky, complemented by wavy, long blonde hair and large brown eyes. Her lips were thinner than she would have liked, but she was fortunate to have a cute nose and slender figure which made her appear much younger than forty.

Growing up as an only child had been lonely at times, and difficult, as her father had died when she was just three years old. Sadly, her mother had passed away last year leaving a void echoing in her heart.

    Her thoughts
