Sins of the Father
Chapter 1
Eva Perrault stood just across the street from the small building that housed her new temporary assignment. She breathed calmly, trying to relax and slow down her heartbeat. But it didn’t seem to be working. She was nervous.
The building was not imposing at all. It was a small, red brick store front with a peeling sign that read ‘Harvest Church Tutoring Center’ in faded white letters on the front. Graffiti adorned either side of it as it did most of the buildings in this part of Brooklyn, New York.
An outsider would not be able to imagine why an immaculately dressed young woman with sleek blonde hair, tall heels and designer accessories would be intimidated by a ramshackle building. But, an outsider wouldn’t have a clue as to what Eva Perrault had, been through.
Your name is Eva Sutton,
she whispered to herself. You grew up in Queens. Your dad’s a teacher, your mom’s a nurse.
She’d repeated this invented back story over and over again, hoping that she start come to believe it herself. It didn’t quite work that way.
In the back of her mind, she was still Eva Perrault, the girl from Manhattan running from her father and her own past.
Hastily, she reached into her small, Dolce and Gabbana clutch purse and pulled out her smartphone. The numbers 8:56 glared accusingly back at her. As though reminding her that she had planned on being five minutes early. Now, she would barely make it on time.
Realizing that she could not stall any longer, she took one last, deep breath and made her way across the street.
When she reached the inside of the office, she was surprised to find that it was every bit as cluttered and ramshackle on the inside as it was on the out.
A front desk with a pile of papers stacked on either side of it greeted her. In the middle of the desk stood an ancient-looking computer and landline phone.
A dark, gray hue hung over the entire room as sunlight forced its way in through grimy windows. There were a few faded posters on the wall.
Hello?
Eva called to the back of the room. She could see a dark hallway with a flickering light behind it, leading to what looked like two office doors.
She was beginning to wonder if the temp agency had sent her to the wrong address, when one of these doors flew open and a tall, wiry figure rushed out.
As he made his way quickly towards the front desk, looking down at a stack of papers in his hands the whole time, Eva realized that this figure was a man who looked to be only a little older than her. His short, curly dark hair looked frazzled. He stared down at his papers through small spectacles that balanced precariously on the bridge of his nose.
He stopped at the front desk and set his
