About this ebook

Talia Jordan has just hit the starving writer's jackpot. When she applies for a mysterious job working as a ghostwriter for an unnamed billionaire via a website suggested by her roommate, she's not quite sure what to expect. When she meets her mystery client, Brandon Dikes, she discovers a man who is not only willing to pay top dollar for Talia's writing, but also proves to be a laid-back, humorous employer who is easy to work with and he's easy on the eyes. Talia agrees to the job under two conditions. First, she doesn't want her name connected to this project in anyway. Second, her relationship with the charming and flirty Brandon must remain strictly professional. But, as she works with him more and more, her second condition becomes harder and harder for her to cling to. Will she be able to emerge from this assignment with her heart intact?

Brandon Dikes has a big problem. His father, who has already fired him from the family company because of an unflattering interview, is now threatening to cut him off financially. There's only one thing Brandon knows to do in the face of this. Get revenge. He hires a ghostwriter, Talia Jordan to help him write a tell-all book that will reveal all of his father's dirty secrets. But, as he and Talia work more closely together, she begins to call into question everything he thought he knew about his life. Including his relationship with his father. When things between Brandon and his father come to a head, will Brandon seek an even swifter path to vengeance. Or, with Talia's help, will he do the unthinkable?

Ghostwriter - Sweet Clean Romance - Johanna Jenkins

    Ghostwriter

    Chapter 1

    Talia

Why did I decide to do this? That’s the only question I can ask myself as I lug my tired body up the stairs and into my Brooklyn apartment. As soon as I get inside, I lock the door and throw myself and my too heavy school bag down onto the couch.

We live three stories up in a building with no elevator. That means I often climb the stairs while carrying my fifty-pound school bag. Not to mention it’s in Brooklyn. That’s a ways away from both my school and my work in Manhattan. But, that’s the price I pay for cheap rent in New York. And, in New York, even cheap rent is pricey. That’s why I’m working two jobs while also taking a full load of classes.

I slide the bag off my arm and listen to it thump the floor. Immediately, I lift my hand and massage the shoulder where the weight from the long strap on my bag dug into my skin. It's a minute or two before the stinging starts to fade.

I heave a sigh as I try to  admit to myself that I can’t keep doing this. I can’t keep taking classes, working at the art gallery and writing articles for five dollars a pop on the side. But, I also have to pay rent. And therein lies the dilemma.

I flop my head back on the couch and look around the three bedroom apartment I’ve shared with my best friend, Sarah and a series of revolving door roommates for the past year.

We’re lucky, really. This place is pretty big by New York standards. I have room to prop my feet up on the coffee table while I face the wall with the small kitchenette stands in the corner of my eye.

Ever since Sarah agreed to take on the superintendent job in the building, we’ve even had our rent reduced. Sarah doesn’t act as the super because she’s burly or good with tools. It’s just because she knows who to call to get things fixed. And, she seems to be the only person in the building able or willing to get stuff done. And as soon as anyone meets her, they see why. No one says no to Sarah.

Hey, Loser, I hear a deep almost bored sounding voice from the bedroom next to me. I turn to smile at my roommate.

Sarah’s short stature and petite frame stand in stark contrast to the confidence both in her eyes and the deep voice she commands.

Hi, I answer. Off to work?

I’ve got to pay the rent somehow, she says moving into the kitchen to grab her coffee mug.

Don’t remind me, I tell her. Rent’s almost due. And, as soon as I pay my share...I’m not sure how I’m going to be able to eat until I get my check from the gallery.

You don’t have any money from writing coming in soon, do you? Sarah asks. She’s turned towards the sink and I can tell she’s deliberately looking away from me. For all her bravado, I know she doesn’t like pressing me about money.

Not much, I answer reluctantly. It’s only ten dollars for my last piece.

Finally, she turns from me and heaves a sigh.

You’ve got to find some better gigs, she says. I mean, ten dollars per article for hours of work and research...

I know it’s tantamount to stealing, I say. But, that’s the going rate. I don’t know what else I can do.

What you really need, she begins. Is one gig. Just one writing gig that pays enough for you to get by.

If you find one I’d be happy to grab it, I say.

Sarah grabs her purse and her mug, for a moment, I think she’s going to simply shake her head, say ‘see you later’ and walk out. Instead, she crosses over to me and hands me a slip of paper.

Try that site, she says. I open the slip to find
