About this ebook

Hannah Henderson is leaving home. She has answered an advertisement placed by a rancher in New Mexico, and has agreed to marry him. She has also agreed to leave behind the painful memories of a former fiance who abandoned her for a wealthier woman at the first opportunity. Hannah desperately hopes that, even though she may not find love out west, she may at least be able to have a good life.

When she arrives in Santa Fe, however, she discovers that her fiance, Adam Jennings, has secrets of his own. Placing the advertisement for a bride seems more his meddling sister's idea than his. Indeed, he seems torn by the idea of having Hannah in his home at all. When it becomes clear that Adam has a past perhaps more devastating than her own, Hannah becomes desperate to learn it. But, she soon discovers that some secrets are best left undisturbed. Will Hannah and Adam be able to shed the dark secrets of their past and build a life together?

A New Beginning - Mail Order Bride Historical Western Romance - Johanna Jenkins

    A New Beginning

    Chapter 1

Iam leaving my home . That’s all I can think as I stare out the window onto our small street for what I know will be the last time.

It is true that this was my decision. I knew what would happen when I answered the advertisement in ‘Hand and Heart’ magazine. I knew what would happen when I began corresponding with Mr. Adam Jennings of Santa Fe, New Mexico. I knew that eventually, he would ask me to join him there. To become his wife.

I knew all this but that doesn’t make my departure any easier. I look down from the window and try my best to focus on packing my small satchel. I will not take much with me. Three dresses, a hairbrush and my Bible.

Mama offered to give me some of the photographs she had had taken two years ago, but I declined. As difficult as it is to leave home, I know I cannot drag any memories of the happy life I once lived here with me, without bringing the painful ones.

It is too painful to consider, even now. No one else seems to understand my distress. Not even my parents.

After all, it has been two years since Frank broke our engagement. One year since he married Charlotte Merton from the large estate in town.

Everyone, it seems, is waiting for me to come out of this state of mourning for my lost life. My lost love. Even my mother has told me more than once that my moping is unbecoming.

‘Hannah, you are still young,’ she had said. Frank Jessup is not the only man in New England. There are plenty of young men who would be more than happy to have a beautiful girl like you for their wife."

In my mind, I knew she was right. I even tried to follow her advice. I attended all the usual balls for the season. Danced with several eligible young men.

But, every time I came close to letting Frank go, something of him would be there again. Either he would be in attendance with his new wife. Or, one of his brothers would be there with Frank’s eyes and hair and smile.

Each time I saw something of him, everyone and everything else paled by comparison. That is why I knew I had to get away. That is why I answered Adam Jennings request for a bride five months ago. That is why I accepted his marriage proposal. And, that is why I am leaving my childhood home, never to return.

Hannah! Mama’s voice calls up the stairs. Your father has the wagon ready. You had best hurry, you don’t want to miss your train.

Coming Mama, I call back down to her.

Snapping my satchel closed, I took one last look out the window. I take in the sun beaming down on the lemon tree I used to swing from as a child. The bench in the garden where I used to sit on spring afternoons reading.
