    FOREWORD

It is very refreshing and motivating to come upon a book like the one in your hands. This book titled ‘Skill Sharpening: A Panacea for Unemployment’ is an inspiring effort by the author to meaningfully contribute to the empowerment of Nigerian youths. I make bold to say that the publication of this book is in tandem with the vision of entrepreneurship which among other things is to create employment for the youth. Therefore, this book comes to the limelight in a good time particularly, now that there is urgent need to provide solutions to the bewildering problems of unemployment and economic recession in the contemporary Nigerian state.

I commend the author Ugoaru Chinaeme for his creative and inspirational sagacity in writing this book. The contents of this book are well structured to prove the fact that the author is conscious of the problem of youth unemployment in Nigeria and that, he is passionate at offering possible and plausible solutions targeted at stemming the tide. This, however, is premised on objective study of skill development and sharpening. The author did a good job by interrogating youths and their practices in contemporary society and bringing out the templates for preventing, managing and resolving unemployment problems.

Two themes paramount in this book are like two legs on which we humans walk in life. The first is a sense of personal worth, which is the backbone of human identity and the essential foundation of success and happiness in life. The second is a sense of personal responsibility. We either accept a personal responsibility for our lives, by owning our actions and reactions. Or we blame them on others. Owners get in touch with their own inner spaces. Blamers suffer a kind of human exhaustion in their persistent avoidance of responsibility. They seriously limit their potential, self-knowledge; they never get to know themselves.

I recommend this book as a toolkit for sharpening skills especially for youths as they face the challenge of unemployment. It is highly recommended to all both for its inspiring significance, its literary contents, its relevance to Nigerian society and the human interests that it engenders. Don’t let the riches of this book be lost.

    PREFACE

Albert Einstein, the greatest thinker that ever lived, was told by a Munich schoolmaster that he would Never amount to anything much.  Yet this man rose to be great in life!  He used criticism and failures as bridges to – and not barricades to – success!  A man lost his job after being queried by his boss in the office. Next morning, his body was found hanging on a tree near the factory. He committed suicide because he thought he was a failure!  He could not separate failure from mistakes as events from himself as a person.  Never forget that failure is not a person; failure is an event! Elbert Hubbard confirms it further:  There is no failure in longer trying.

Life is 10% what you make it and 90% how you take it!  In addition, life can be great, if you are. The way you see life controls the way you experience it.  Life is neither sweet nor bitter, it is neither good nor bad; it all depends on how we live it. The quality of a man’s life is determined by his everyday living – you create your world.  The summation of your thoughts, words, actions, reactions, inactions, relationships, beliefs and activities, make up your life.

Life becomes worth living when you live it worthily. There are many people looking for beauty and willing to cross the wildest ocean, climb the highest mountain and pay the highest price to have fulfillment in life. We need not to pay such an exorbitant price.  The only price of meaningfulness in life is to sharpen the abilities in you (your skills), and be the best of who you are and what you do.

Life is the soil, we are the farmers, and our actions are the seeds.  Life is interesting for those who are interested in living.  It is boring for those who are bored of living. The giver receives whatever he wants in life.  The peaceful man enjoys all the peace he desires in life.  The diligent man reaps the fruit of his labour; the humble man gets all the labour he needs.  That’s just what life is.  Life is what we make it to
