About this series

LIGHTSPEED is a digital science fiction and fantasy magazine. In its pages, you will find science fiction: from near-future, sociological soft SF, to far-future, star-spanning hard SF-and fantasy: from epic fantasy, sword-and-sorcery, and contemporary urban tales, to magical realism, science-fantasy, and folktales.

Welcome to issue 168 of LIGHTSPEED! One of the things speculative fiction does best is exploring different kinds of minds via the use of unusual story structures. Well, we're kicking off this issue with a powerful story that nearly breaks the very nature of reading! "We Will Teach You How To Read | We Will Teach You How To Read" by Caroline M. Yoachim tells the story of an alien culture in a fresh, exciting format. Luckily for you, we've included instructions to help you understand every fantastic page. We also have a new original science fiction story by Nisi Shawl: "Over a Long Time Ago," a dark tale of unhappy relationships and space exploration. Stephen Geigen-Miller also delves into space exploration in his flash piece "The Last Thing They See Is Laika." Ash Howell's story of gene manipulation "Chaos Theory" joins our flash SF. Ben Peek returns to the Ministry of Saturn in his dark fantasy story "Exit Interview." P H Lee explores the nature of tricksters in their alternate history tale "Richard Nixon and the Princess of Crows." We also have a flash story ("Done Deal") from Rory Harper, and another ("And the Dreams That You Dare to Dream") from Marissa Lingen. In nonfiction, we have a terrific array of book reviews, and of course, our spotlight interviewers have sat down with our authors to get more insight into their stories.

Welcome to LIGHTSPEED's 116th issue! This month, both our SF originals wrestle with alternate realities. In "The Men Who Change the World," writer Christopher East creates an alternate Earth with peace, prosperity...and a mysterious corporate entity that's more than it seems. In our second original short, "She'd Never Had a Name Before," J.R. Dawson gives her main character the opportunity to meet the sister she never got to grow up with. Will blood prove thicker than dimensionality? We also have SF reprints by duo Jason M. Hough & Ramez Naam ("All Together Now") and N.K. Jemisin ("The Ones Who Stay and Fight"). Our original fantasy shorts explore some very unusual travel destinations. First, we have a story by Alexander Weinstein called "Destinations of Joy," which will make you wish you could hop on a plane headed straight into Alexander's imagination. Around here, we love giant robots, but our first SF original this month-"The Author's Wife vs. the Giant Robot," by Adam-Troy Castro-made us think twice about living in the shadow of one. Ask any two writers or critics to nail down the difference between fantasy and science fiction, and you'll come up with two different definitions. They're sibling genres who exist on continuum of the unlikely, and sometimes they even meet up. This month, we're serializing a novelette with one foot in the domain of SF and one foot proudly in the realm of fantasy: "The Crowning of the Lord Tazenket, Vulture God of the Eye," written by S.G. Demciri. Our other stories are a little easier to define. We've got a new post-apocalyptic SF short ("Zen Solaris and the God-Child") by Arden Powell, a flash piece ("Scientists Confirm: There's a Black Hole in the Center of Your Heart") from Jo Miles, and a reprint by C.C. Finlay ("One Basket"). P H Lee returns with the latest Tale of the Great Sweet Sea: "The Turnip, or, How The Whole World Was Brought to Peace," which is just as savory as it sounds.
