Actually, experts also have different views about body language. According to the evolutionary theory of Darwin, a person can inherit his facial expression. However, there’re those scholars who believe that culture also influences a person’s interpretation of facial expression.

There’re two main models, or views, used in order to understand the how body language works, as referred to by José Soto & Robert Levenson (2009).

The Cultural Equivalence Model suggests that a person can also accurately understand the emotions of other people & even animals. It basically implies that body language is a product of evolution, & therefore, humans understand the emotions being carried by certain gestures or facial expressions even if non-humans display them. According to the evolutionary theory of Darwin (1872), animals & human beings share the same postural expressions of fear, happiness & anger. As such, a person can relay emotional signals naturally to other people. In a 1971 experiment of Ekman & Friesen, it was also discovered that tribe members in Papua New Guinea could recognize facial expressions of Americans even if these tribesmen had just no exposure to US media.

The key implication of the Cultural Equivalence Model is that the understanding of body language is natural because animal species collectively evolved to obtain body language to express similar purposes. Additionally, since animals also developed body language through evolution, body language in itself is very essential to the survival of humanity. It also contributed to developing the communication between individuals. Therefore, body language is helpful in building communities. A final implication is that, for humanity, race doesn’t matter when it comes to interpreting body language. Regardless of culture, we’ve evolutionarily similar body language.

The Cultural Equivalence Model can also be used to explain why humans can attribute certain actions of pets such as cats or dogs as happy or angry even if we don’t understand the language of these animals. The Cultural Equivalence Model simply explains why smiling can be found across all races of humanity, even in primates & other animals. In this point of view, we also understand the emotions carried by certain gestures because we developed them to help us survive better as a species.

The Cultural Advantage Model predicts that a person can actually interpret the body language efficiently & accurately of another individual if both belong to the same race. According to O’Toole, Peterson & Deffen-bacher (1996), individuals are more accurate in interpreting body language from faces of people of their same race. Also more importantly, if a person feels that they belong in a certain group regardless of race, it’s found that they’re better in recognizing emotions expressed by members of that group (Thibault et al., 2006). This model, unlike the Cultural Equivalence Model, simply refers to recognition of body language as a group phenomenon instead of as a species-wide evolutionary advantage.

In general, the Cultural Equivalence Model couldn’t take into account the effect of race or communities. Gestures under this model refer to the very basic ones that’re shared by almost all people. More specific actions are also described by the Cultural Advantage Model.

Although there’re different researches that support both models, the consensus is that there’re universally recognized emotions like sadness, disgust, contempt, anger, fear, surprise & happiness. In addition, some recent findings show that shame & pride are also universal.

    Applications of Body Language

In essence, body language is an aid in communication. There’re different guides & books that teach people about it & how they can benefit from it. The application of body language enhances second-language acquisition. It’s a substitute to verbal language if there’re individuals who’re not able to communicate verbally because of aphasia or deafness. Furthermore, the application of body language in the deceit detection process is done via micro-expressions in poker & law enforcement.

Body language is crucial in learning another language successfully by achieving sociolinguistic, strategic & discourse competencies. Sociolinguistic competence means understanding the body language that helps in a specific language use. There’s a conscious ability to perform & recognize body language to achieve language fluency outside of the discourse level.

Body language is also useful in actually enhancing teaching. It can urge, hint or guide a learner to the right answer. It’s most effective when paired with other verbal methodologies. The three characteristics of body language that actually help enhance teaching are suggestion, communication & intuition.

The intuitive characteristic used in teaching also exemplifies the language by matching body language with individual words. For instance, a teacher can mimic a crying person to teach his student about the word cry. The communicative characteristic creates an atmosphere & environment that helps effective learning. By providing a holistic environment, a student quickly acquires new knowledge. Lastly, the suggestive characteristic creates opportunities for better understanding of a specific word or even concept by using body language.

Body language is also useful in law enforcement. Law enforcers use it to search for
