Author

William Rubin

William Rubin is a practicing physician who enjoys weaving tales of medical/scientific intrigue. Writing for him is equal parts catharsis, creativity, and escape from the rigors of a busy medical practice and the joys and challenges of raising a family. The works of James Patterson, Robin Cook, Michael Palmer, and Patricia Cornwell inspired Dr. Rubin to create the Christopher Ravello Series. Challenges and tragedies in Dr. Rubin’s life, particularly the untimely death of his mother, provided some of the underlying drama, conflict, and turmoil for the series’ lead character. When he isn't busy practicing medicine or crafting his next medical thriller, Dr. Rubin enjoys time with his family and friends, running, playing piano, and travel. He values your thoughts, insights, and feelings on this book so please leave a review on your favorite website(s)

    PROLOGUE

Michelle’s heart pounds with fear as she tears down the stairwell. Rick’s boots hammer ever closer, each reverberation amplifying her anxiety as she dodges gaps in the rotted wood. Lunging onto the next landing, she stumbles and slams into the floor. Panic overtakes her as she scrambles to her feet with Rick bearing down on her. One more set of stairs, then I can outrun him on the street! But Michelle’s heart sinks as the front door flies open. Tony comes crashing in, gun drawn. His beady eyes lock in on Michelle, unaware Rick is close behind her.

Only one chance to get out of this alive. Michelle pauses a split second, waiting till Rick is almost on top of her but still out of Tony’s line of sight. It’s now or never. Here goes…

    Chapter 1

    Saturday, October 10th, 2015

Adorned in her favorite black sportswear, Michelle Ravello laces up her bright pink Hoka running shoes and smiles. Since freshman year in high school, when she discovered how good she was in track and field, she’s been a dedicated runner. A good, long run is just what she needs right now to melt away the stress.

She straps Christine, age four, and James, age three, into the back seat of her Honda Odyssey and smiles brightly. Be good today and we can go for ice cream later, she says with enthusiasm.

Sundaes! Hudson Creamery, Mommy—please! Christine pleads. James nods. Yeah, chocolate. Michelle offers a wary smile. Okay, but only if you’re good while Mommy’s working out.

We’ll be good! rings the chorus as Michelle finishes adjusting the car seat straps and hops in the front seat.

Heading south on Route 9, Michelle admires the beauty of the Hudson River off to her right and the rolling hills of Rockland County just beyond. The river, its tranquil, still waters dotted by the last of the season’s sailboats, is one of the few bright spots in their lives this past year and a welcome distraction from her troubling thoughts. Michelle shakes her head. Growing up in Yonkers, across from the sprawling grounds of Untermeyer Park with its Persian Paradise Garden and Grecian architecture, the Hudson was never far from her, yet always seemed just out of reach.

Mommy, are we there yet? Christine chirps.

No, pumpkin, we just left Peekskill. She smiles at Christine through the rearview mirror. Do you remember where Mommy’s going to work out today?

Christine giggles. Rockafella preserve? she says with caution.

Michelle makes a show of looking at the passenger seat next to her, occupied only by her handbag and a gym bag containing a change of clothes, shoes, and her toiletries. No Daddy today, sweetie. So we’ll go to a gym where people can watch you while Mommy is busy.

James looks at Christine, then Michelle, perplexed at the exchange.

Club Fit! Christine yells as James’ eyes go big at the thought of a visit to the Club’s fabled childcare facility, The Energy Center.

Very good, sweetie. Just a little bit longer.

The blue minivan glides past the exit for Buchanan, a small village in Westchester County, New York nestled
